His father Cyrenius C. Torrance was a lawyer who served as an attorney for the Seneca Indian nation from 1852 to 1855 and district attorney of Erie County from 1861-1864.[1]
He attended Yale University and graduated from the Sheffield Scientific School in 1875.[2]
