1956 Asbury Park Plane Crash
Linea Aeropostal Venezolana Flight 253 was a Lockheed L-1049E Super Constellation that departed New York's Idlewild Airport on the night of Wednesday, June 20, 1956, bound for Caracas, Venezuela. Shortly into the flight, the no. 2 propellar began to overspeed and could not be feathered. Forced to turn back to Idlewild for an emergency landing, vibrations caused by the uncontrollable propellar caused a wing attachment to separate, resulting in loss of control of the aircraft. The plane crashed into the ocean off Asbury Park, New Jersey, killing all 74 passengers and crew on board.
