[edit]Dr. Holland, otherwise known as "Jimmie", has had a worldwide impact on the field of Psycho-Oncology and Psychosomatic Medicine. She worked for over 40 years in the field of Psych-Oncology.
Career
[edit]In 1977, Dr. Holland became Chief of the Psychiatry Service at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York, and became the first chairman of its Department of Psychiatry from 1996 until 2003[1]. The Psychiatry Service at MSK was the first ever clinical, research and training service established at a cancer center[2]. She became a Professor of Psychiatry at the Weill Cornell Medical College, and held the Wayne E. Chapman Chair of Psychiatric Oncology at MSK[3].
In 1980, Holland founded the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS)[4]. In 1984, she co-founded the International Psycho-Oncology Society (IPOS)[5].
In 1989, she co-edited with Dr. Julia Rowland the first ever textbook on psycho-oncology, Handbook of Psycho-Oncology.[6] She also authored the books "The Human Side of Cancer" and "Lighter as We Go: Virtues, Character Strengths, and Aging", which have help patients diagnosed with cancer cope, as well as helping those who have supported patients diagnosed with cancer[7].
In 1992, Holland became co-editor of the journal Psycho-Oncology, along with Dr. Maggie Watson from the Royal Marsden Hospital.[8]
In 1995, Holland was elected to both the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences[9]. In 1996, she was named the inaugural Chairwoman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, the first ever department of its kind.[10]
Accolades
[edit]In 1994, Dr. Holland was awarded the American Cancer Society's Medal of Honor for Clinical Research[11]. In 2000, she was honored by the American Psychiatric Association with their Presidential Commendation[12].
