The cortex, or the outermost layer of the brain, is highly interconnected and responsible for consciousness, sensory integration, and movement initiation. The cortex is what allows the nervous system to integrate sensory signals from the outside world, interpret them, and coordinate a response to them; for example feeling the sensation of heat from a hot stove and instinctively recoiling your hand away from it.
