He was born into the family of Lazar Abramovich Khodos and Bronislava Moiseyevna Kann.[6] Graduated from Rostov Pedagogical Institute.[7] He began his interest in chess at an early age, when he first started playing with his older brother Mikhail. In 1953, his older brother brought Herman to the Rostov Palace of Pioneers, where he met his coach Semyon Shevakhovich.[8]

He drew attention to himself in 1956, when he participated in a simultaneous game session with W. Unzicker, who at that time was the champion of the FRG. The bout lasted several hours and ended in a victory for Hodos.[9]

In the same year Hodos became a participant of the All-Union level competition: as a member of the RSFSR junior team he won gold medals of the team championship of the country among juniors (the team scored 74 points out of 108 possible). In 1957, he led the RSFSR junior team in a similar competition. The team again took first place.

In 1958 as a member of the RSFSR adult team he became a bronze medallist of the USSR team championship.

In 1959 in Riga he again led the RSFSR national team at the 11th Junior Team Championship and showed the best result on the 1st board.[10] In 1960, Khodos took part in a tournament under the Scheveningen system held in Cheboksary. He scored 7.5 out of 13 and exceeded the standard of Master of Sport by half a point.[11]

In 1961, Khodos participated in the World University Team Championships held in Helsinki.[12] In 1962, having scored 13 points out of 15 possible, became the winner of the semi-final of the 30th USSR Championship and won the right to participate in the USSR Championship.[13]
