The "Old-Timer's" game was a football scrimmage held by the University of Notre Dame to conclude their spring football practice season from 1929 to 1967. The series pitted the outgoing members of the previous season's fall varsity team against the unfinalized squad that would represent the Fighting Irish in the next fall football season.

Game Summaries

[edit]

1929

[edit]

The first Old-Timers game, dubbed the Old-Timers vs New-Timers scrimmage, was established by Knute Rockne to allow his outgoing football players their last chance to play at Notre Dame, while also permitting him to test his new varsity team against the previous years'. The old-timers scored three touchdowns, but given the nature of the game no extra points were employed so the final score was 18–0.[2]

1930

[edit]

The Old-Timers game was not played during the 1930 spring football season.

The game was played on April 29th at 2:00 pm, with admission costing ten cents for students and a quarter for everyone else. The proceeds of the game went to the Notre Dame Monogram Club. The varsity wore their blue home jerseys for the game, while the old-timers probably wore green or white. Laurie Vejar was the only member of the victorious old-timers team of the previous year to return. The old-timers were co-captained by Hugh Devore and Tom Gorman.[3]

The first score was made in the first quarter by Devore, but the extra point missed. The varsity tied the contest with a one-yard touchdown by Al Costello after a lengthy goal-line stand, but the extra point was blocked by Moose Krause. The final score of 6–6 was the first and only tie game in the history of the Old-Timers game.[4]

The game was played on May 3rd at 2:00 pm, with the proceeds going to the Monogram Club. Due to injuries, star Old-Timers players Will Shakespeare and Andy Pilney had become unable to play, severely hurting the veteran's chances.[5]

The old-timers scored off of a quarterback sneak and two long passes, while the varsity scored after a behind-the-shoulder catch by Bunny McCormick and an extra point by Charley O'Neill, the only successful attempt of the day. The last score for the varsity was made by Larry Danbom in the fourth quarter. [5]

The final 18–13 old-timers victory was of keen interest as it was the same score as the one between Notre Dame and Ohio State during the 1935 "Game of the Century", which many of the old-timers had played in.

Blue-Gold game

[edit]

After the Varsity-Old Timers game was abolished by Ara Parseghian in 1967, a new end-of-season spring scrimmage was employed that matched two varsity teams against one another.
