Rise of Kingdoms, commonly abbreviated to ROK and formerly known as Rise of Civilisations, is a 2018 free-to-play real-time strategy mobile game released by Chinese game developer Lilith. In Rise of Kingdoms, players choose between a variety of real-world historical civilisations, each of which has its own strategic advantages. The game's core gameplay loop involves building and expanding your city, recruiting various commanders, exploring the game world, and diplomatic relations with other players, including real-time turn-based battles.[1]

Rise of Kingdoms has been criticised for its usage of microtransations and in-app purchases. Examples of this include daily special offers, the 'VIP' system, which can be advanced through via the in-game currency of 'Gems', and the Growth Fund, which gives the player gems as they advance through the game.[2] Rise of Kingdoms is considered by many to be a pay-to-win game, as it contains many examples of monetisation and player retention techniques that are typical of such games.[3]

Rise of Kingdoms has become known outside of a video game context for its extensive marketing campaigns; these come in many different forms. Some ROK adverts are fully animated and are made up of cinematic footage[4], while others show staged social interactions between real people, which result in the person with the highest in-game 'power' gaining access to something denied to the others. These adverts, particularly the 'power' related ones, have been satirised online for their 'bizarre' nature.[5]

Gameplay

Civilisations

[edit]

When first loading the game, players must choose from one of 14 'civilisations', which are based on real-world historical cultures, kingdoms, and empires. Examples include ancient Rome, imperial China, medieval England (styled as 'Britain'), and medieval Germany. Each civilisation has a starting 'commander', which are required to lead an army onto the world map. Each civilisation also has a unique unit, as well as special bonuses.[6]

Buildings and research

Alliances

[edit]

In Rise of Kingdoms, players can join an 'alliance', which functions as a way for players to pool resources and work together (similar to the clan seen in many other games). Alliances offer many different benefits to players:

Combat

[edit]

Rise of Kingdoms has three standard unit types: infantry, archers, and cavalry. Each troop type balances the other in a rock-paper-scissors style system; cavalry counters archers, archers counter infantry, and infantry counters archers. There is also a fourth unit type, siege units: these are weak to all other troops, but useful when attacking other players' cities, and for resource gathering.[7]
