Food and Feasting
Anglo Saxons had a daily diet of bread, porridge and vegetable stews. Sometimes they had eggs or cheese or a small amount of meat or fish. At harvest times and other special occasions there was a village feast. Villagers would gather in the hall of the Thane to eat roast pig and drink ale or mead (a strong drink made of honey).
A warriors Letter
Dearest Edric and Elga
I send you fondest greetings. I think of both of you safe at home while I am stringing my bow for battle tomorrow. We have been treated kindly by everyone here. The king Alfred himself disguised as a common soldier was invited to stay in a poor mans house. When he left him in charge of cooking the cakes, the king was so vbusy with his battle plans that he let them burn you should have heard the way he shouted at the king! If we win tomorrow Alfred has great plans , he will grant some land to the Danes, but the rest of England while be ruled by him, He will make good laws, and build churches and forts as well as ships to protect our coast . Truly he will be Alfred the Great!
I have to sleep now so I am ready for battle. Tomorrow we will decide the future of England! I pray God to keep you safe from the Danes .
Your loving father ,Oswin
