History
[edit]The origin of Audi in South Africa can be traced back to 1946 when Industrial and Commercial Holdings signed a franchise agreement with Studebaker Export Corporation. [1] This led to the local assembly of Studebaker cars and commercial vehicles,[2] marking the establishment of SAMAD (South African Motor Assemblers and Distributors), a public company that soon purchased a 20.2-hectare site on the outskirts of [Uitenhage] (now Kariega) for R2500.[3]The company employed 320 people and produced volumes of 14-16 units per day. By 1951, Volkswagenwerk and SAMAD reached an agreement to manufacture the first Volkswagen vehicle in South Africa, the [VW Beetle].[4]
In the late 1960s, Volkswagen South Africa concluded an agreement with Auto Union GmbH to produce Audi vehicles in South Africa.[5] The Audi Super 90 was the first model to be manufactured in 1968. By 1972, production of the [Audi 100] range began, featuring three variations: the 100 S, LS, and LS Automatic.[6]
In 1971, Audi introduced the slogan, “Vorsprung Durch Technik” (Advancement Through Technology), and released the first generation [Audi 80] in 1972. This car featured all-wheel drive technology.[7] In 1979, the Audi 200 was introduced as a luxury car.[8] This was followed by the third generation Audi 100 in 1988 which incorporated aerodynamic design.[9]
The company has continued to develop technologies such as the Audi Virtual Cockpit.[10] This digital dashboard, located above the steering wheel, displays information according to the driver’s preferences.[11] In 2020, Audi Connect was introduced in South Africa with the release of the [Audi A4]. This technology allowed drivers to access vehicle-related information on their smartphones.[12]
Awards
[edit]Audi received the [Car of the Year] award from the South African Guild of Motoring Journalists in 1996, 2002 and 2006.[13]
From 2010 to 2018, the 2.5 TFSI engine received the 'Engine of the Year' award in the 2 to 2.5-litre category.[14]
