The 2016 Major League Quidditch season was the league's second, and was contested by sixteen teams over the course of the 2016 summer. This season doubled the number of teams in the league. The sixteen teams were split into four divisions, with the North Division composed of the Cleveland Riff, Detroit Innovators, Indianapolis Intensity and Rochester Whiteout, the East Division composed of the Boston Night Riders, New York Titans, Ottawa Black Bears and Washington Admirals, the South Division composed of the Austin Outlaws, League City Legends, New Orleans Curse, Kansas City Stampede, and the West Division composed of the Los Angeles Guardians, San Francisco Argonauts, Salt Lake City Hive, and Phoenix Sol.
During the regular season, each team played a set of three matches against every other team in their division, comprising a total of nine matches. Based on the results of those nine matches, the teams were seeded for the MLQ Championship, which the top three teams from each division qualified for. The championship was decided with two rounds of double-elimination matches before a best two-out-of-three semi-finals and then championship series.
The Boston Night Riders won the 2016 MLQ Championship, played at the Hometown Heroes Park in League City, Texas, ending the season with a perfect 15–0 record. They defeated the Austin Outlaws 2–0 in the finals, but the matches were the only two that Boston played in snitch range for the entire season. By winning the title, Boston was awarded the Benepe Cup, named in honor of Alex Benepe, the co-founder of the sport, for the second time in a row.
