General thoughts on Wikipedia

[edit]
  • Major article improvement is done by one user, sometimes two
  • Copyeditors (more than MoS, reference fixers) are desperately needed for Peer Review, GAC, FAC
  • Disappointing to see an article's monthly edits consist of IP or new user changes followed by reverts.
  • Help and tutorial pages are mediocre. More images and video needed
  • IPs never (99%) cite their sources. Block IPs on biographies of living people (BLP)?
  • Readers (and professors) still don't know how wikipedia actually works. a few friends assumed there was some paid authority figure checking every edit
  • improve search engine
    • Implemented 'Did you mean...'
    • Added autosuggest search terms
  • Add wysiwyg or make syntax simpler for people to edit.
  • Use tools/bots to find factual errors and inconsistencies in articles (such as Wikipedia:Biographical pages with several incompatible dates of birth)
  • Make text simpler and easier to read for non-experts (see Flesch–Kincaid readability test and the results of this study
  • Condense documentation and tutorials, add more images and gifs/video to those pages.
  • Find some way to see who added or removed certain content or images from an article. (WikiTrust)
  • Eliminate wikirot -> flagged revisions, semi-protection
  • A 'Report this' link. A lot of users encounter vandalism, mistakes, copyright violations and don't know or don't have time to fix it. Clicking on this link would bring up a textbox where the user can specify the error. The form would have the article name and revision and other relevant information.
  • Make links for sister projects (especially Commons) more visible for readers. It often has many more images than the article can accommodate, yet the only the reader will find it is if he/she finds the small link to it.
  • Have a new tab or subpage for useful external links. (see citizendium)
  • One of the biggest issues from new user edits is lack of sources. Bring up a alert box if no reference and ask what's the source? (include refToolbar in default toolbar]])
  • Discussion pages need revamp. See LiquidThreads
  • FlaggedRevisions, [[1]] are long overdue
