GAIAEcological Perspectives for Science and Society is a transdisciplinary academic journal published by oekom verlag. The main focus is on background information, analyses and solutions of environmental and sustainability problems. The journal traces back to the initiative of scientists of the Zentrum Philosophie und Wissenschaftstheorie, University of Konstanz, the Institute for Economy and Environment, University of St. Gallen and the Department of Environmental Sciences, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. Since 2001 GAIA is published by oekom verlag. Registered in the ISI-databases since 2005, GAIA is also listed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and Current Contents/Social & Behavioral Science. The impact factor of the journal was 1,250 in 2013, ranking it 50 out of 96 journals in the category Environmental Sciences in the ISI Web of Knowledge. Content and Sections

  • Magazine: This section reports on ongoing environmental and sustainability research, environmental policy and research promotion.
  • Forum: Aim of the Forum section is to stimulate discussion. Original papers are published including essays, expressions of opinion and reactions to articles that have appeared in recent GAIA issues.
  • Research: In this section original scientific articles about environmental and sustainability research are published.
  • Books: The Books section is dedicated to the presentation, discussion and review of new publications relevant to GAIA’s subject matter.

Peer Review

Articles published in GAIA are chosen for their scientific content as well as their ease of comprehension and significance to readers of various scientific disciplines. Papers submitted to GAIA are subjected to double-blind expert peer review and are cross-read by at least one person foreign to the subject. Currently, the rejection rate is about 50 to 60 percent. All articles are subject to meticulous scientific editing before publication.

Target Group

Focusing on sustainability and environmental issues, GAIA is a transdisciplinary journal for scientists of all disciplines, for those interested in the sciences in business and administration, in politics, society and the media as well as for students.

Masters Student Papers Award

In 2014 the GAIA Masters Student Paper Award was established. It recognizes outstanding inter- und transdisciplinary results from young scientists in the field of environmental and sustainability research. The prize is awarded in cooperation with the Leuphana University of Lüneburg and the Selbach-Umwelt-Stiftung.[2]
