[edit]The Tradescantia pallida is a purple plant that produces white to pink flowers when it blooms, giving it a contrast from the dark purple color. The leaves can grow up to seven inches long and have pointy tips. Due to the size of the leaves you can easily see the segmentation on them.
Many people like to buy this plant due to its ability to purify the air in the area it is placed. Some people even hang this plant in their homes and use them as houseplants for the same reason. People who use them as houseplants place them in rockeries, hanging plant baskets, in window sills,gardens and in flower beds. People also like this plant because it does not require a lot of care. The minimum time you have to pay attention to this plant is when applying a multi-purpose fertilizer twice a month during the spring and once a month during the winter. This is just to make sure the soil maintains its moisture. This plant grows year round, but the flowers, roots, and purple color become more dominant in direct sunlight.
Scientific Discoveries
Purple Heart is unique in that it is an effective air-purifying plant. According to a study involving twenty-eight different plant species, Purple Heart was shown to be the most effective at removing Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from indoor air.[1] Through the process of phytoremediation scientist and researchers were able to identify the purple heart as one of the many types of air purifying plants.

They have come up with studies on what causes it, how to measure and locations on where it has the most pollutants. This article is about how the Tradescantia Pallida plant has been exposed in different places for biomonitoring purposes. It also explores the study of genotoxic effects of heavy metal ions in the plant and how it is used to measure pollution levels. This article chose two sites to conduct the study of the tradescantia Pallida plant in particular for biomonitoring; Cerqueira Cesar and Congonhas districts, used for their polluted areas of San Paulo city, and Caucaia do Alto County, used as a non-polluted site a few miles away from the downtown area of San Paulo.

In this article, pollution caused by heavy metal properties is also a major concern that scientist has identified and have come up with a solution for. Using the roots, shoots, and leaves of the Tradescantia Pallida, scientist were able to find a way to have Chromium removal from wastewater by the Biosorption process. All the chemicals and Plants that were used during this study were from facilities in India, where they were stored and carefully processed. After careful testing they found out that the leaves of the plant were the most successful part in the removal process.
