Yhden naisen hautajaiset (One woman's funeral) is a debut solo album by a Finnish singer-songwriter Elisa Tiilikainen. Tiilikainen is formerly known from the band Haloo Helsinki! by her stage name Elli Haloo. On her solo album she uses the stage name Ellips. The album snatched the number one spot in The Official Finnish Charts in its first week.

Yhden naisen hautajaiset was chosen as the Radio Helsinki's album of the week a week after its release.[1]

Production

[edit]

Tiilikainen herself is in charge of most of the composition and lyrics on the album with the exception of the songs "Lasityttö" (composition Tiilikainen, Matti Mikkola,Timo Kämäräinen) and ”Magnum opus” (composition Tiilikainen, Mikkola).[2] According to Tiilikainen the lyrics on the album speak about "foremost survival." They also handle topics such as relationships, loneliness, social exclusion, issues with substance abuse, death and the fear of it.[3]

The album was produced by Matti Mikkola.[4] The tracks on the album are played by the same group as in her gigs: Sami Kuoppamäki (drums), Juho Kanervo (bass), Timo Kämäräinen (guitars), Janne Puurtinen (keyboards) ja Markus Pajakkala (wind instruments).

Singles

[edit]

The first single on the album, "Maailma on rikki" was published on the 18th of January 2019. The song rose to 10th place on the viral Finnish singles list in its first week. On a list ranking radio plays, "Maailma on rikki" claimed spot 23 straight away, but fell off the rankings of the most played 100 songs after second week of its release. On the week 8/2019 the song rose again to the spot 88, and continued climbing up the charts until finally reaching its best ranking at spot 20 in week 14/2019.[5] On the album the singles lenght is 5.14 minutes, but for radio plays it got edited into a so called "radio edit", which is 4.27 minutes long.[6][7]

The other single, "Kolera-allas", was released on the 20th of March 2019.

Reviews

[edit]

The style of the album has been commonly said to have thorough 1970's vibes.[8] In genres it has been depicted as proge, "Finnish love rock", "hippie rock" and even schlager-like. (track "Kolera-Allas").[9]

The reviews have highly praised the sounscapes and arrangements created by producer Matti Mikkola. The arrangements have, in places, been depicted even better than the actual composition of the music. Details created by Mikkola keep the album interesting.[9] In a review published by Helsingin Sanomat, the album is described as "Glorious on the outside, with one excellent song, a couple of good songs and a few forgettable ones." [8] On the same wavelength was the Rumba magazine to which, besides the first track on the album "Maailma on rikki" writes that the other songs are simply not on the same level. Despite this, the review still praised the "Exceptionally well-played music" in the album.[10]

In the review published by Rumba, the top two songs from the album were ”Lasityttö” and ”Lintu joka lensi ikkunaan."[10]
