Aiv Puglielli (/v pʊlˈjɛli/ AYV puul-YEL-ee)[1] is an Australian politician who is a member of the Victorian Legislative Council for the Victorian Greens, representing the North-Eastern Metropolitan Region. He was elected in the 2022 Victorian state election on the 24th count.[2][3]

Early life and career

[edit]

Puglielli was born and raised in Australia, where he discovered his queer sexual identity during his formative years at Eltham High School.[4][5]

Prior to entering Parliament, Puglielli was an artist, composer, and producer working across the independent arts community in Australia. With a background in classical trumpet and composition, he trained at the National Institute of Dramatic Art, receiving a Diploma of Music Theatre in 2015.[6] He then completed a Bachelor's degree at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2018.[6]

Puglielli has contributed to projects like the Binary Coalescence Project, The House on Fire at the Edge of the World, and Lady Moon and the Gondolier, and composed works such as Radiation Language and Astronomy on Country, receiving commissions and grants from organisations like National Science Week and the City of Melbourne Arts Grants program.[7] He has also received a mentorship with the Australian Art Orchestra Mentorship Program, and has previous been invited to workshop with the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.[7]

In 2020, Puglielli advocated for greater diversity and transparency in the Australian musical theatre industry, criticising the Rob Guest Endowment, a prominent musical theatre scholarship in Australia, for its lack of inclusivity and representation of artists of colour.[8]

In May 2023, Puglielli explained to Star Observer that his decision to enter politics was fueled by a determination to ensure young and queer voices are adequately represented in Parliament.[4]

Political career

[edit]

Puglielli was elected to the Legislative Council at the 2022 Victorian state election. He is the youngest member of the 60th Parliament of Victoria.[9][10]
