[edit]After discussing the components, installation and cost trends of rooftop solar panels, the consideration of their environmental impacts is crucial to gaining a complete understanding of its overall value. Through harnessing power from the sun, solar panels reduce reliance on fossil fuels, mitigating air pollution and decreasing greenhouse gas emissions. However, the production, installation and disposal of solar panels have severe environmental consequences. Looking at both the benefits and drawbacks of rooftop solar panels can bring a clearer perspective on their role in environmental sustainability.
Positive Environmental Impacts
[edit]Known to be a sustainable source of energy, solar panels have had a significant impact towards our environment. As it becomes a more prominent source of power in the 21st century, the installation of rooftop solar panels has contributed in many ways to combating climate change.[1] Replacing fossil fuels, such as coal and natural gases, with solar panels has reduced the release of carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide—greenhouse gases—into our atmosphere.[2] This decline in harmful air pollutants has lead to improved air quality, essential for protecting ecosystems, preserving natural habitats and sustaining wildlife. According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), an acre of solar panels to replace natural gas reduces about 208 to 236 times more carbon dioxide each year than an acre of forest.[3] Additionally, for every 1,000kWh of energy generated by solar panels, we prevent the release of 8 pounds of sulphur dioxide, 5 pounds of nitrogen oxide, and 1400 carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.[4] Data collected in California also supports the link between reduced carbon emissions and the increased use of solar power. For example, the installation of 113,522 solar systems in Californian households has resulted in an average reduction of 696,544 tons of carbon emissions.[5] In summary, increasing the use of rooftop solar panels has proven to be an effective strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. As solar energy replaces fossil fuels, it plays a crucial role in combating climate change, preserving ecosystems and and supporting wildlife. As the data from California and other regions demonstrate, solar power is an effective took fr reducing carbon emissions on a large scale, making it essential part of the global transition to a more sustainable future.
Negative Environmental Impacts
[edit]Although rooftop solar panels contribute greatly to the environment, the manufacturing, installation and disposal process can be considered its downfall. The process of manufacturing solar panels requires significant upfront energy for mining, processing and transporting raw materials like quartz, aluminum, and copper. [6] This process also involves hazardous chemicals such as cadmium and lead, which, if not handled properly, could lead to pollution. [7] Additionally, as solar panels technology advances, leading to increased availability of cheaper and more efficient solar panels, a growing volume of solar waste will increase as older panels are being replaced.[8] According to research by Atalay Atasu, these replacements could generate 50 times more waste in just four years than the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) predicts in the next 30 years.[8]As the use of solar energy continues to expand, developing more efficient recycling technologies and sustainable manufacturing processes will be critical to mitigating these negative impacts. While solar panels offer substantial environmental benefits, the manufacturing, installation, and disposal processes pose significant challenges. The energy-intensive production, use of hazardous chemicals, and growing solar waste require urgent attention to ensure the environmental costs are minimized.
