Bibliography

[edit]

This is where you will compile the bibliography for your Wikipedia assignment. Please refer to the following resources for help:

  • Adding citations
  • Evaluating articles and sources
  • "Annual Meeting: October 22-25." The Journal of Negro History 55, no. 3 (1970): 245-51. Accessed October 5, 2020. http://www.jstor.org/stable/2716429.
  • This source is documentation of a meeting of “The Journal of Negro History 55”, and there is not a specified author.  In this documentation, the reader is able to get an understanding of what this organization does and what it covers when they meet.  This source falls under Wikipedia’s ‘good source’ because it is an independent source that is not directly related to Mary T. Christian.  This source will be helpful for my article work because it places Christian in this organization, giving a speech.  It plays witness to her character and her involvement outside of work.
  • Davis, Veronica. Hampton University. Accessed October 5, 2020. http://www.hamptonu.edu/.
  • This book covers the history of Hampton University and how it became the school that it is. In this book Veronica Davis uses photos to represent the school’s changes and how it developed over time.  Davis uses photos from Hampton University, thus providing authentication and quality of the sources.  The source falls under Wikipedia’s ‘good source’ because of the neutrality of Davis’ book, along with the reliability of the publishers.  This source will be useful because it provides background to Mary T. Christian’s story; with a picture provided it explains how Christian got her footing at Hampton University and continued to succeed there.
  • Fain, T. (2015, Aug 02). After 50 years, reflecting on the voting rights act and its impact, future. TCA Regional News Retrieved from https://trmproxy.mnpals.net/login?url=https://www-proquest-com.trmproxy.mnpals.net/docview/1700497256?accountid=12548
  • This article is a reflection of the Voting Rights Act after 50 years in Virginia; interviewing Virginia legislators and other public representatives about voting and discrimination against black voters. Travis Fain is a reporter for TCA Regional News, often covering Virginia news.  Fain uses good sources, often interviewing legislators or representatives to get a better understand of Virginia voters and discrimination now and 50 years ago.  The interviews are important because they give context and understanding to the article.  This falls under Wikipedia’s ‘good source’ because it is an independent source, not directly related to Mary Christian or written by her.  This article is just another testament to Mary T. Christian’s impact and what she was continuing to do throughout her life, such as register individuals that had not voted before, to vote and use their voice.
  • Jones, Matt. “Former Del. Mary T. Christian, Long-Serving Hampton Legislator and Professor, Dies at 95,” November 12, 2019. https://www.dailypress.com/news/obituaries/dp-nw-mary-christian-death-20191112-nca52mnwazdulidhva6w6vkcaa-story.html.
  • The article is an obituary of Mary T. Christian’s life and the impact she had on other people; it can be useful for my Wikipedia assignment because it is a testament to her positive life.  In this article, Matt Jones writes about all of Christian’s achievements and success in her life, along with how she became so successful.  Overall, I think Jones used good sources to create this article.  He does interview Christian’s daughter, which can create some bias, but for the most part his use of sources is successful.  Matt Jones is a journalist at the Daily Press, he mainly covers education, which is fitting for this article.  This is a good source because it is an independent source that is not related to Mary Christian or Hampton University.
  • Patterson, Jerry L. "Nongradedness: Why Has It Eluded the High Schools?" The Clearing House 47, no. 7 (1973): 392-95. Accessed October 5, 2020. http://www.jstor.org/stable/30184674.
  • This article discusses non-grading in the school system and what it could mean for the students involved.  Jerry Patterson uses many solid sources to support his thesis with research to help build his understanding on non-grading in schools.  Patterson is a lifelong educator that has conducted research in this subject matter.  This falls under Wikipedia’s ‘good source’ because is it an independent source, but also because is a reliable publisher that focuses on scholarly information.  Patterson mentions Mary T. Christian briefly in this article, but it can still be used to show Christian’s work in education.  She not only worked in education, but she published books and articles about education and how to improve on it.  This article can be used to give a better understanding of how her work in education impacted people.
