Proposed Topics and Potential References

[edit]

The following topic has been approved to pursue:

1. Women in Hinduism: This topic interest resulted from our class forum discussion on “Playing With Fire”, which explored the stories of several women in India dealing with the inequalities of the Caste system. Even when looking into the current Wikipedia article, there seemed to be a lack of breakdown or reference to rituals in practice and in scripture that has lead to mistreatment of women. Particularly in relation to how widows are treated in India, there are a number of practices that are justified by religion, and several movements in place to try and separate the religion from such cruel rituals. I would like to add to the existing article on Women in Hinduism. a. References: i. Young, Katherine K. "Women in Hinduism." Today's Woman in World Religions(1994): 77-135. ii. Sundari, K. Pursuing Topic

[edit]

The topic I am proposing to contribute to is the article on “Women in Hinduism”. This is a topic that has a Wikipedia advisory on it, asking for contributions because as of December 2012, it was possible that the article contained original research and needed additional citations for verification. As of this month it was also suggested that the article may need to be completely rewritten to fall in line with the quality standards. There are several sources of concern in this article, and often times the religion of Hinduism is misrepresented, particularly in relation to the presence of women in the religion. All parts of the existing entry do seem relevant to the topic, but some of the topics can be consolidated, and certain sections can be added to make the topic more relevant. The article lacks explanation about the basic tenants of Hinduism and movements that ban discriminatory practices.

There are several issues with source verification as there are links that are broken, questionable content that is not properly backed up evidence, and need for further evidence. I will not be providing missing citations, but rather restructuring the article to highlight different points. I will most likely be deleting vague sections, and will include sections of scripture that apply to analysis. Ensquared (talk) 03:08, 1 October 2015 (UTC)
