Sinaloa (Spanish pronunciation: [sinaˈloa] ⓘ), officially the Free and Sovereign State of Sinaloa (Spanish: Estado Libre y Soberano de Sinaloa), is a state in Northwestern Mexico. It is bordered by Sonora in the north, Chihuahua in the northeast, Durango in the east, Nayarit in the south, and the Pacific Ocean in the west. The state is divided into eighteen municipalities, with its capital city being Culiacán.
History
[edit]Prior to the arrival of the Spaniards and their subsequent invasion of Mesoamerica, there existed six main hunter-gatherer tribes in the region of Sinaloa: the Cahita, the Totorame, the Pacaxee, the Tahue, the Xixime, and the Acaxee.[9]
