Summa Metaphysica is a metaphysics/philosophy/theological treatise by the iconoclast David Birnbaum of Manhattan. The work proposes an original paradigm all-embracing metaphysics. The lynchpins of the work are Birnbaum's inter-related original-paradigm concepts of Quest for Potential∞, the Cosmic Womb of Potential and Extraordinariation.
Book I, God and Evil[1] (KTAV 1988), focuses primarily on the age-old philosophical conundrum, which has vexed monotheism over the millennia, Theodicy[2]: If there is a God who is all-powerful, all-merciful and all-knowing, why does gross evil befall the innocent?
Book II, God and Good[3] (Millennium/Harvard Yard Press 2005) focuses on Birnbaum's cornerstone theme of Potential – from multiple vantage points throughout the cosmic order – past, present and future.
Birnbaum presents an 18 point all-embracing metaphysics: The first nine points (presented in Summa I)[4] are referred-to as the Unified Formulation. The second set of nine points (presented in Summa II) are referred-to as Principia Metaphysica.
Summa II presents, as well, an original presentation of a Cosmic Tool Kit of 30 'cosmic tools,'[5] which underpin the metaphysics.
Summa Metaphysica has been assigned as a Course Text in dozens of universities globally. The work is the centerpiece of an international academic conference April 2012 on Metaphysics[6] sponsored by Bard College, Annandale-on-the-Hudson, NY.
