Tools

[edit]
Citing sources (from User:Gilliam)
  • ProveIt GT (Highly recommended!)
    • Enable ProveIt at your preferences under 'Gadgets'. It will appear thereafter in articles when you click Edit. Copy and paste items needed into the boxes, such as URL, page title, etc. Use Preview function for optimal results.
  • Citation Tool for Google Books (Highly recommended!)
    • Citation Tool works with digitized books at http://books.google.com/ Search Google Books for subject matter. Once you find a page containing relevant info, copy and past URL into the Citation Tool, and it will automatically generate a ref you can add directly to Wikipedia.
  • Google Newspaper Archive
    • The free Google Newspaper Archive is a searchable database of old newspapers. Once you find the article you need, copy/paste URL, date, author, etc. into ProveIt.
  • User:Dispenser/Reflinks
    • This is a tool that will automatically convert bare URLs into bot-generated inline refs.

Edit summaries

[edit]
  • Not a reliable source: publisher appears in our [[wp:List_of_companies_engaged_in_the_self-publishing_business]]
  • Roman vs italic for [[differential]], [[imaginary unit]], and [[Euler's number]], see [[MOS:MATH#Roman versus italic]] and [[MOS:STYLERET]].
  • Too broad - See [[Template:Infobox musical artist#associated acts]]: "for professional relationships with other notable musicians or bands that are significant to this artist's career."
  • Unneeded edit. Spaces are optional for section header markings. See usage with and without spaces in for instance [[MOS:SECTIONS]] and [[MOS:OVERSECTION]]
  • [[MOS:AT]]: "Do not use articles (a, an, or the) as the first word"
  • [[MOS:CAPTIONS]]: "Most captions are not complete sentences but merely sentence fragments which should not end with a period."
  • [[MOS:CIRCULAR]]: "Do not link to pages that redirect back to the page the link is on."
  • [[MOS:CONTEXTBIO]]: "Ethnicity, religion, or sexuality should generally not be in the lead unless it is relevant to the subject's notability."
  • [[MOS:CONTRACTION]]: Wikipedia avoids contractions.
  • [[MOS:CURLY]]: straight style is recommended in Wikipedia.
  • [[MOS:DATEVAR]] and [[wp:RETAIN]]
  • [[MOS:DOUBLESPACE]]: "Some editors place two spaces after a period/full stop; these are condensed to one space when the page is rendered, so it does not affect what readers see." No need to change, and see also [[MOS:STYLERET]].
  • [[MOS:EMDASH]]: "An em dash is always unspaced (without a space on either side)"
  • [[MOS:FORMULA]]: "For inline formulae, such as a2 − b2, the community of mathematical editors of English Wikipedia currently has no consensus about preferred formatting." See also [[MOS:STYLERET]].
  • [[MOS:HEADER]]s and titles take sentence case: "Only the first word in the caption or header should be capitalized"
  • [[MOS:HEADING]] and [[MOS:AT]]: "Do not use A, An, or The as the first word... "
  • [[MOS:HEADING]] as with [[MOS:AT]]: "Do not use articles (a, an, or the) as the first word"
  • [[MOS:LISTCAPS]]: "If the list items are sentence fragments, then capitalization should be consistent – sentence case should be applied to either all or none of the items". No need to change here, and see [[MOS:STYLERET]]
  • [[MOS:LQ]]: "If the quotation is a single word or fragment, place the terminal punctuation outside."
  • [[MOS:MATH#PUNC]]: "Just as in mathematics publications, a sentence which ends with a formula must have a period at the end of the formula."
  • [[MOS:MUHAMMAD]]: "Honorifics for Muhammad should generally not be used in articles."
  • [[MOS:NOSECTIONLINKS]]: "Section headings should not contain links, especially where only part of a heading is linked."
  • [[MOS:NUMERAL]]: "Generally, in article text Integers from zero to nine are spelled out in words."
  • [[MOS:NUMRANGE]]: "Like date ranges, number ranges and page ranges should state the full value of both the beginning and end of the range, separated by an en dash."
  • [[MOS:OVERLINK]]: "Unless a term is particularly relevant to the context in the article, the following are usually not linked..."
  • [[MOS:PBUH]]: "PBUH, or the fuller "peace be upon him", after Muhammad or other Islamic prophets — recommended action is to remove."
  • [[MOS:REFPUNCT]]: "All reference tags should immediately follow the text to which the footnote applies, with no intervening space."
  • [[MOS:REFPUNCT]]: "Ref tags are placed after adjacent punctuation, not before"
  • [[MOS:REPEATLINK]]: "Generally, a link should appear only once in an article..."
  • [[MOS:SECTIONSTYLE]]: "... section headings should:... Not redundantly refer back to the subject of the article."
  • [[MOS:SECTIONS]]: "For technical reasons, section headings should: ... * Not contain <math> markup."
  • [[MOS:SERIAL]]: "Editors may use either convention so long as each article is internally consistent." No need to alter serial comma style, ands see also [[MOS:STYLERET]].
  • [[MOS:STYLERET]]: "... it is inappropriate for a Wikipedia editor to change from one style to another unless there is some substantial reason for the change."
  • [[MOS:SURNAME]]: "After the initial mention, a person should generally be referred to by surname"

  • [[WP:ENGVAR]] and [[wp:RETAIN]]
  • [[WP:MOS#Wikilinks]]: "[...] capitalize the first letter [...] when specifically referring to the linked article by its name. Example: [[Snake]]s are often [[venomous]], but [[lizard]]s only rarely (see [[Poison]])."
  • [[WP:NOTSEEALSO]]: "See also section should not include red links or links to disambiguation pages."
  • [[WP:NOTSEEALSO]]: "See also section should not repeat links that appear in the article's body or its navigation boxes."
  • [[WP:PBUH]]: "recommended action is to remove."
  • [[WP:Reliable sources/Perennial sources]]: "arXiv is a self-published source, and is generally unreliable..."
  • [[WP:SDNONE]]: "...but some article titles are sufficiently detailed that an additional short description would not be helpful..."
  • [[WP:STYLERET]]: Undone, as a comma is not needed after a short prepositional phrase. See https://prowritingaid.com/grammar/1000157/Why-should-you-put-comma-after-prepositional-phrases : "For short introductory phrases (fewer than four words), you can choose to add a comma or not."
  • [[WP:TALK#REPLIED]]: "if anyone has already replied to or quoted your original comment, changing your comment may deprive any replies of their original context, and this should be avoided."

This works in png, but not in MathJax (although during the math rendering problem week between 7-Feb-2014 and 15-Feb-2014 it also worked in MathJax, but with a slight vertical alignment problem):
