A battle took place in and around the city of Selydove (and surrounding villages), Donetsk Oblast, in August 2024, during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Background

[edit]

After the Russian forces' victory over the city of Avdiivka and the village of Ocheretyne, they advanced further into Pokrovsk Raion with the objective of capturing the city of Pokrovsk. On July 19, Russian forces successfully captured Prohres, and on August 14, they took control of Zhelanne, which became their initial foothold for seizing other settlements.

Russia moved south and east of Zhelanne to seize Novozhelanne and Zavitne around August 18, and footage confirmed that Russian forces had control over both settlements. On August 21, Russian forces advanced further south of Mykolaivka and south of Zhelanne, capturing Komyshivka, Ptyche, and Kalynove between August 21 and 23.

Russia reportedly succeeded in capturing Novohrodivka on August 28 and advanced towards Selydove after Ukrainian forces withdrew from certain positions in the city. Russian forces captured Karlivka on August 30 after prolonged battles, securing logistical routes towards Selydove.
