Scorpio (♏) is the eighth astrological sign in the Zodiac, originating from the constellation of Scorpius. It spans 210°–240° ecliptic longitude. Under the tropical zodiac (most commonly used in Western astrology), the Sun transits this sign on average from October 23 to November 22. Under the sidereal zodiac (most commonly used in Hindu astrology), the Sun is in Scorpio from approximately November 16 to December 15. Depending on which zodiac system one uses, an individual born under the influence of Scorpio may be called a Scorpio or a Scorpion.

Associations

Scorpio is one of the three water signs, the others being Cancer and Pisces. It is a fixed, negative sign. Scorpio is associated with three different animals: the scorpion, the snake, and the eagle. The snake and eagle are related to the nearby constellations of Ophiuchus and Aquila. Scorpio is also associated with the Greek deity Artemis, goddess of the hunt, who is said to have created the constellation Scorpius. According to The Astrology Bible, Scorpio's colours are deep red, maroon, and black.

Character Traits Overview

The Scorpio Zodiac-Sign concerns itself with beginnings and endings despite being unafraid of either. As a highly opinionated and straight-forward person, those with this sign travel in a black-and-white world. They tend to know what it is they want and will do whatever they can to achieve this, disliking the concept of 'beating around the bush'.

Those born under this sign are serious when it comes to digging up facts about others. Scorpios dislike small-talk and will zero-in on essential questions with no hesitation to invade one's personal boundaries. Scorpios like to know everything about everyone because they tend to be suspicious about peoples' good intentions. A defence mechanism of sorts.

With an immeasurable curiosity, Scorpios love to probe and know what questions are the right ones to ask. They have a very keen sense of intuition.

As a very independent sign, Scorpios mature quickly as children and grow into fiercely determined adults. With a strong reputation in being bold, other signs admire and look up to them for inspiration.

Symbol, Planet, Element and Quality

The Scorpion is the symbol of Scorpio. Much like the Scorpion would rather kill itself than be killed, those born under the eighth sign are clever, perceptive and in ultimate control of their own destiny. Others may find this sign overbearing and even self-destructive, but this personality type is adamant in seeing things move forward.

Scorpios have traits of fearlessness and do not like to lose. They are very stubborn; however, this trait plays well alongside a determination to succeed. Scorpios work as hard as they do so that they can one day sit back and be proud of themselves.

Water is the element associated with this sign. Those born under this sign are very emotional, they feel deeply but remain emotionally reserved. Scorpio's tend to repress their emotions and keep them from arising regardless of what outward expression has been given.

Scorpio is ruled by Mars and Pluto. According to Roman Mythology, Mars was the God of War and is the first (and most ancient) ruler of Scorpio. When Pluto was discovered in the 20th century, it was also assigned to the sign of Scorpio. Known as the God of the Underworld, Pluto when matched with Mars formed an intense energy. This planetary combination makes for people who have traits of: motivation, penetrating energies, and awareness.

Personalities

Strengths

Highly attuned to the vibrations of others. Scorpios are intuitive, and very focused on knowing who's who and what's what. Signs that are governed by water are very in-tune with others, and find it quite easy to read into gestures and body language.

Those born with the sign of Scorpio are intense, passionate beings that are filled with desire. Although complex and secretive at times, Scorpios are determined, loyal, and strong-willed people. Like scorpions , Scorpios are unafraid, competitive and can withstand tough conditions.

This personality type is great at self-control. Scorpios rely on control in order to feel safe, secure, and organized.

When it comes to love, Scorpios will soften up their cold exterior. They are very caring and devoted to their lovers, even if it means holding on a bit too tight. Scorpios are also known to be very sexual creatures. The great strength of the Scorpio-born is in their determination, passion and motivation. Scorpios do not know the word, 'quit'.

Weaknesses

Due to their black and white way of seeing the world, Scorpios are very stubborn, can lose their temper very quickly and even become vengeful when someone gets in their way. They may even partake in acts of subtle manipulation to get what they want.

Scorpio's ability to look into things can sometimes be a curse. They can potentially take an insignificant matter and blow it out of proportions. They can also get very jealous and controlling. Scorpios tend to lash out at others by keeping too much pent up inside.

Beware of the Scorpio who feels crossed. They can turn vindictive in no time.

Mythology

There are a few mythical variations detailing the origins of the Scorpius constellation:

1. Orion deemed Artemis a better hunter than he even though he was just as great, which made her take a liking to him. Jealous with rage, this angers Artemis' twin brother, Apollo, and provokes him to send a Scorpion to attack Orion which eventually results in his death. Remorseful that someone she respected as a hunter had to die, she asks Zeus to put Orion up in the sky so that every year when Winter comes, Orion will be able to hunt up in the sky. In the summertime he flees when the constellation of the scorpion comes around.
2. Orion boasted that he could and would kill all the animals on the Earth. The Goddess of the hunt, Artemis and her mother, Leto, dispatched a Scorpion to kill Orion. After beating Orion and winning the battle, Zeus brought the Scorpion up to heavens.
3. Orion, known as a mighty hunter was so great and fearless that he vowed to kill every animal living on the Earth. Gaia, the Goddess of the Earth and protector of animals was angered by Orion's claim and asked Scorpio, a giant scorpion, to kill Orion before he would harm the animals. Scorpio attacked Orion by stinging him with his stinger. As a reward for his bravery, and for saving the lives of all the animals, Gaia placed Scorpio in the night sky where he is seen chasing Orion during the year. Orion is allowed to hunt peacefully in the wintertime, but once spring comes, Scorpio rises again to continue chasing Orion out of the sky.
