The tram network in Ostrava, Czech Republic's third largest city, is provided by the transport company DPO (Dopravní podnik Ostrava).
At the present time, the DPO operates a total of 62.7 km of standard-gauge tramway on a total on 19 lines numbered 1-12, 14, 15, 17 (as well as night lines 18 and 19). Ostrava's tram network is the third largest in the country, after Prague and Brno.
History of standard-gauge trams in Ostrava
[edit]Creation of the first trams in Ostrava
[edit]Just like in other cities, the main reason of creating a tram network in Ostrava was connecting the city with the train station (today Ostrava hlavní nádraží), which is located in the Přívoz district. Although there had already been omnibuses operating on the route, they were quickly starting to become insufficient with their relatively low capacity. In 1882 Anton Lux, who was the mayor at the time, requested a concession for the creation of the first standard-gauge railway in Ostrava. Even though the profitability of the project was confirmed, the it was eventually canceled.
On the 18. July 1894, the first steam tram railway was opened from the train station through Moravska Ostrava to Vitkovice. The owner was Brünner Local Eisenbahn Gesellschaft (Czech: Brněnská společnost místních drah). The line was run using 4 locomotives, 15 passenger cars and 6 cargo cars. The speed of the trams reached 15 km/h outside the city and 10 km/h in the city.
In 1897, there was a new power plant built in Ostrava and there were immediately plans proposed, for electrification of the line. The first electric trams were put in service on the line on 1. May 1901.
21st century
[edit]There are 9 Inekon 01 Trio trams in operation from 2002 - 2004. From 2005, there are also new VarioLF trams, which are low floor variants of the T3. There have also been renovations of current tram tracks and in August of 2015, there was a new mass transit terminal built at Hranečník.
Between 2003 and 2011, some of the KT8D5 trams were converted into single-ended versions later called KT8D5R.N1 with a drop-centre.
In 2018, there were new Tango NF2 trams delivered to Ostrava. The new trams are fully low-floor, feature air conditioning and USB charging ports. There have been 40 of these trams ordered. As of December 2018, 25 of them have been delivered and put into service.[1]
In 2018, there was also a change in the DPO livery from the old dark-blue and yellow to a new, light blue colour with silver accents.
