The commune is part of the historical province of Anjou[1], and is located in the Baugeois region.
Geography
[edit]Location
[edit]Chenu, a commune in the southern part of the Sarthe department, is situated at the heart of the Maine angevin region.
The village is located 43.8 km south of Le Mans, the department’s capital, 35.7 northwest of Tours, and 11 km southwest of Château-du-Loir, the nearest town[2].
Neighboring Communes
[edit]The neighboring communes are La Bruère-sur-Loir, Saint-Germain-d'Arcé, Nogent-sur-Loir, as well as Villiers-au-Bouin, Couesmes, Saint-Aubin-le-Dépeint, Brèches, and Saint-Paterne-Racan, all five located in Indre-et-Loire[3].
Geology and Relief
[edit]The area of the commune is 3056 hectares. The elevation ranges from 47 to 133 meters[4]. The highest point is in the southern part of the commune, in the Boiserard Forest, while the lowest point is in the north, along the Fare River, at the boundary with Saint-Germain-d'Arcé[3].
Hydrography
[edit]The main watercourse in Chenu is the Fare River, which borders the commune to the west[5]. Its tributary, the Ardillière stream, borders the commune to the south[6].
The commune is also crossed by the Chef de Ville, a tributary of the Fare. It supplies the washhouse and the moats of the Château du Paty.
Climate
[edit]In 2010, the commune's climate was classified as a degraded oceanic climate of the Central and Northern plains, according to a CNRS study based on data spanning the 1971–2000 period[7]. In 2020, Météo-France published a typology of French metropolitan climates, placing the commune in a transition zone between a oceanic climate and a altered oceanic climate. It falls within the Middle Loire Valley climatic region, characterized by good sunshine levels (1850 h/a) and low summer rainfall[8].
For the 1971–2000 period, the average annual temperature was 11.2 °C (52.2 °F), with an annual temperature range of 14.7 °C (58.5 °F). The average annual precipitation total was 730 mm (29 in), with 11.2 d of rain in January and 6.8 d in July[7]. For the 1991–2020 period, the average annual temperature recorded at the Météo-France meteorological station closest to the commune, in Saint-Christophe-sur-le-Nais, 10 km (6.2 mi) away in a straight line[9], was 12.1 °C (53.8 °F), with an average annual precipitation total of 682.2 mm (26.86 in)[10][11]. Future climatic parameters for the commune estimated for 2050 under various greenhouse gas emission scenarios are available on a dedicated website published by Météo-France in November 2022[12].
