[edit]

Khayal, the most popular form in Hindustani Classical Music is represented by a number of stylistically different schools called the Gharana, one of the prominent being Dilli Gharana and Ustad Tanveer Ahmed Khan belongs to that great Dilli Gharana. In these days, Ustad Tanveer Ahmed Khan is the only vocalist in the gharana who purely justify that Dilli Gharana is a Taan Pradhan Gayaki Gharana.

Historically speaking about the background and the gharana, the legendary musician Miyan Achpal khan is the fountain head of the Dilli Gharana. A senior contemporary and sangeet guru (music preceptor) of Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar, the last Mughal emperor. Miyan Achpal Khan trained the likes of Ustad Tanras Khan. He belonged to the lineage of Meer Hasan Samant & was son and Mureed (Spiritual Disciple) of Bheekan Shah. Miyan Achpal was both a musician and composer of high order.

Dilli Gharana and Gayaki (Style)

[edit]

In Dilli Gharana gayaki is quite different from others. It starts with unfolding of the raga begins with nom-tom alaap followed by the vilambhit (slow tempo) khayal. After enunciating the Sthai, the raga is elaborate with bol-alaap (Badhat). Therefore the vocalist proceeds with the Antara (second part) as with the Sthai. Dilli Gharana does not rigidly confine to note by note development of raga but makes judicious sortie into higher octaves. This segment is embellished with gamak, meed, khatka, murki etc. This style is especially known for its lachav and ghulav (flexibility and melting),

The Drut (fast tempo) khayal begins with bol-banav, i.e. artistic variation of text. Dilli Gharana is reputed for its variety of intricate taans, which may well be called its half mark. Other outstanding features are the shapely amad, complex yet accurate Tihaais, purity of raga and fidelity of compositions.

It is the tradition of spiritual relationship and mentoring where teachings are transmitted from a guru "teacher" (Sanskrit: गुरु) to a śiṣya "disciple" (Sanskrit: शिष्य) or chela. Such knowledge, whether it be Vedic, agamic, architectural, musical or spiritual, is imparted through the developing relationship between the guru and the disciple. It is considered that this relationship, based on the genuineness of the guru, and the respect, commitment, devotion and obedience of the student, is the best way for subtle or advanced knowledge to be conveyed. The student eventually masters the knowledge that the guru embodies.
