The French wine-growing area of Blaye forms part of the Bordeaux wine-growing area and lies along the right bank of the River Gironde. It extends over 5,000 hectares of considerably varied soil tpes (calcareous, sandy and calcareous clay). It surrounds the Côtes de Bourg appellation area and subdivides into three distinct AOC (Appellation d'origine contrôlée or quality-controlled designation of origin) areas:
- Blaye
- Côtes-de-Blaye
- Premières-Côtes-de-Blaye
The red wines are powerful and fruity. They go well with red meats or cheeses, such as :
- hare or rabbit stew, small game
- lamb (lamb stew, leg of lamb)
- beef (roast joint, rib-eye steak, rib roast)
- duck
- dry goat's cheese
- sheep's cheese
The white wines are dry and aromatic. Premières-Côtes-de-Blaye wines go well with the following dishes:
- seafood
- pan fried scallops
- fish prepared in a sauce
- salmon pie
