Tonse Alliance is a Zambia-based organization whose goal is to remove the United Party for National Development from the general election in 2026.[1]
Tonse Alliance chose former Zambia president Edgar Lungu to be their Alliance Chairpeson and presidential candidate for 2026.[1] Speaking during the launch in Lusaka in November 2024, Lungu said that he is honored to lead the alliance as an alternative government in 2026.[1] Lungu said in his acceptance speech in Lusaka in November 2024, "This is a new alliance that Zambians should use to remove the incompetent government of the UPND."[1]
Nancy Tembo, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Malawi, aligned with colleagues in the Tonse Alliance, including the Christian Democratic Party, Patriots for Economic Progress Pep, New Era Democratic Party, Zambia Republican Party, the Edgar Lungu-led Patriotic Front, Umozi Kumawa, New Congress Party, Centre for Constitutionalism and Legal Justice among others.[1]
Controversy
[edit]Critics of Tonse Alliance dubbed it a treacherous coalition at the core.[2]
Others called the Tonse Alliance a fragile coalition, adding "Let us learn from the Tonse Alliance’s mistakes and forge a new path forward, one that prioritises the nation’s interest above political expediency."[3]
