Please change the parent to Cypriniphysi as per the 5th edition of Fishes of the World, also change ref to {{cite web |url=https://www.calacademy.org/scientists/catalog-of-fishes-classification |title=Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes Classification |access-date=5 November 2024 |publisher=[[California Academy of Sciences]]}} as per recent changes to WP:Fishes taxonomy. You should be made aware, editor Quetzal1964, that templates like {{u}} and {{ping}} only work when used in your initial signed post. They don't work when added after the fact. I'm not a scientist, so I must ask, do you mean that Cypriniphysae and Cypriniphysi are scientifically synonymous? If that is so, then all that should be required is to create a redirect from Cypriniphysi that targets the Cypriniformes article and perhaps to just change the reference here on the Template:Taxonomy/Cypriniformes page. If the two names are scientific synonyms, then why is there a need to change the parent on this page? P.I. Ellsworth , ed.put'er there19:54, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if this proposal includes creating a redirect and perhaps moving pages, we must be sure to have the correct spelling. So far you've spelled it two ways, "Cypriniphysi" and "Cypriniphisi". Which is correct? P.I. Ellsworth , ed.put'er there20:14, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Apologies. The correct spelling is Cypriniphysi (pasted from the Fishes of the World) and yes they are different names for the same thing, a clade of fishes. It's not important in the big scheme of things but as the project agreed to use the Fishes of the World classification then it's in line with the rest of the project's taxonomy.Quetzal1964 (talk) 20:19, 25 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As stated above I consider that consensus has already been reached. WP:Fishes was following the 5th edition of Fishes of the World (5FotW) for its Taxonomy above the level of genus. This means that the name of the parent taxon of Cypriniformes should have have been as I have proposed here, Cypriniphysi. I proposed that WP:Fishes changed to used Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (ECof) for taxa at the level of order, and below, as the 5FotW was becoming too outdated, and as the prncipal author had died it was unlikely to be updated. We would continue to follow 5FotW for the higher taxa and for extinct taxa. This was agreed on the WP:Fishes talk page. I have created Template:Taxonomy/Cypriniphysi and that should be the parent template to Cypriniformes in line with the already agreed Taxonomy used in the project. I am currently, updating Taxonomy Templates for fishes to have either 5FotW, above order, or ECoF, order and below, as their references, as agreed and set out at Wikipedia:WikiProject Fishes#Taxonomy.
