|ref= format
[edit]The default |ref= should be removed, or changed to include the volume. That way it wouldn't require manual whitelisting everytime it's used. See Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors for details on the errors this is causing. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested ∆transmissions∆ °co-ords° 12:30, 23 February 2023 (UTC)
- @ActivelyDisinterested: I've tried to fix this, at least in so far as I understand the problem (which TBH isn't well, the link above explains nothing). Now a default will only be used if no volume is provided, or if the online version is used. If a specific volume is given, then it will default to the normal format of editor last names plus year. Year disambiguation
[edit]It might be wise to add disambiguation to the years used by this template. If the template is used twice with the same year, but for different volumes, then the refs in an article won't be able to show which volume they are linking with. e.g. if volume A2 and A3 in an article the then the ref would be "Lilie Ludwig Pratsch Zielke 2000" for both volumes. The stand way to overcome this is to add an alpha after the year, so A2 would be 2000a and A3 would be 2000b. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested ∆transmissions∆ °co-ords° 12:17, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
- @ActivelyDisinterested: pre-emptively adding disambiguation on the other hand is a problem when a single volume is used, because then there would be dates like 2000b without a 2000a. For such cases, the best way is to adjust the referencing simply by using a custom
|ref={{harvid|}}
. Furthermore, the problem you mention is rather unlikely to occur: most users, including myself, have been using the online version, which is freely available and much easier to use than the print volumes. Constantine ✍ 14:05, 25 February 2023 (UTC)- It's just a pain as this will cause a false positive no target error that can't be preemptively whitelisted, and so {{sfn whitelist}} will need to be used each time this is done. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested ∆transmissions∆ °co-ords° 14:13, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
- If you going to be using short form refs, or replacing cites they rely on, can I suggest you turn on the error messages. The details are at the top of the category Category:Harv and Sfn no-target errors. -- LCU ActivelyDisinterested ∆transmissions∆ °co-ords° 14:15, 25 February 2023 (UTC)
