“Major hurricane” tag in NWS hurricane subtemplate
[edit]Is there a proper way to add a way for the NWS hurricane sub template to differentiate between “hurricane” (C1 and C2) and “major hurricane” (C3+) like the old template? I feel like that’s missing from the current one and I’ve looked around for a way that I could safely add that but I am currently at a standstill. Any tips/if this is a good idea? MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 16:10, 5 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi, @MarioProtIV! If it used to be in the old infobox, I think it should also be part of this one. Right now, storm categories are resolved in Module:Storm categories, so the changes would probably need to be made there, specifically for the
atl
keys ofcat3
and above. If this is too advanced for you, I can request those changes to be made to the module. Chlod (say hi!) 03:34, 9 February 2024 (UTC)- I don’t have the permissions anyway to edit that module so yes I would like if a request can be put in there to modify that. - @MarioProtIV: Sorry for the delayed response! I kind of forgot about this... I've made the changes at Special:Diff/1219443799, but have held off on filing an edit request. Should I also add the differentiation for EPac and SAtl, or just Atl is fine? Chlod (say hi!) 20:01, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
- As EPac is also under NHC, yes. For SAtl, I would say hold off since there’s officially no jurisdiction there, but considering Catarina was a thing and is officially called a hurricane by everyone, I would lean yes to adding it there as well, in the highly unlikely event something worse then Catarina happens. Alternatively, just adding -equivalent on the end akin to the WPac can work as well. MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 20:11, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
- Additionally any particular reason why you held off on an edit request? Just curious but I’d understand if you'd want some more opinions from other editors in the project for a consensus first before putting it in. --MarioProtIV (talk/contribs) 20:14, 17 April 2024 (UTC)
- @MarioProtIV: I wanted confirmation for the above before making the request, so that I wouldn't bother template editors with two requests. I've now filed the request here. As for the two month delay since my last reply: that's just me being forgetful. Sorry! 🙇 Chlod (say hi!) 02:03, 18 April 2024 (UTC)

Infobox for cloud tops
[edit]There is no section or parameter for maximum cloud top height. While this isn't a commonly used parameter recorded in secondary sources, cloud top heights are occasionally recorded when it's an exceptionally high value, and it can be useful for describing the intensity of supercells and some cyclones specifically, so I am requesting it be considered to be added. "Damages" should be "damage"
[edit]"Damages" as used here is incorrect and should be replaced with "damage". See WP:DAMAGES. I propose that "damage" be added as an alias for the "damages" parameter and then we can replace all usage in articles with it, then finally delete the "damages" parameter. Note that other infoboxes already use "damage" instead, e.g. Template:Infobox public transit accident. Un assiolo (talk) 14:09, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- @Un assiolo: There's no reason to change anything. Damage is what is stated within the infobox when both damage and damages are used. Noah, BSBATalk 15:59, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- My mistake. It seems both
damage
anddamages
are allowed, and they both show up as "Damage", so we're most of the way there. We just need to deprecatedamages
in favour ofdamage
. It needs to be deprecated because it gives the impression that "damages" is correct. I think the parameter can be replaced in articles where it is used by a bot, and then we just remove the functionality from the template once that's done. I'm going to update the documentation to replace "damages" with "damage". --Un assiolo (talk) 17:20, 11 September 2024 (UTC)
- My mistake. It seems both
- There is no such need; it harms nothing to have an alias available in the code. Nikkimaria (talk) 04:31, 12 September 2024 (UTC)
