Usage
[edit]This template produces an em dash (—). It is longer than both a hyphen (-) and an en dash (–). The primary uses of an em dash are:
- To link clauses, as an alternative to a colon or semicolon (eg. Three alkali metals are the usual substituents—sodium, potassium, and lithium.)
- To set off a phrase or list, as an alternative to a pair of commas or parentheses (eg. Three alkali metals—sodium, potassium, and lithium—are the usual substituents.)
For further detail on dash usage, see MOS:DASH.
