Mamie Garvin Fields

[edit]
  • Comment: This is the editor's second article, so I believe he doesn't have to do a QPQ--but I did one anyway, Template:Did you know nominations/Zu den heiligen Engeln. I'm nominating it for him since it's Thanksgiving and I'm not sure I'll be able to work this out with him before the seven days are up.

Created by PeterYatesVT (talk). Nominated by Dr Aaij (talk) at 18:18, 22 November 2018 (UTC).

Interesting life, on good sources, no copyvio obvious. The hook is fine, but how about saying when in her long life? Dr. you did the right thing, reviewing, because the exemption only counted if Peter had self-nominated. - Peter, good job! I just made a few style corrections, like fewer "would". --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:12, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
@Dr Aaij and PeterYatesVT: I agree with Gerda: although the hook fact is interesting, can something better be suggested here Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 00:47, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
Narutolovehinata5, I'm sorry, but if you were African-American you'd understand just how important this was in segregated America. Now, I made a minor tweak to the hook to date it (long before Civil Rights and Brown v. Board), but I think it's big enough. Dr Aaij (talk) 01:11, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
I am aware of the significance but I'm not sure if most readers would (not everyone in the world is familiar with the civil rights movement). The thing here is that DYK is written for a broad international audience, and hooks are intended to be interesting for laymen. Granted, I don't really have many problems with the hook itself, but perhaps it could be tweaked more to reflect this. Narutolovehinata5 tccsdnew 01:14, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
If the hook is interesting, I think that it should run. I also doubt that most non-Americans don't know about the civil rights movement, especially when it helped start movements in other countries. SL93 (talk) 06:35, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
I support my approval, now that a year was added. - Have standing up for civil rights on the Main page right now, and we can't have enough of it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:59, 20 December 2018 (UTC)
  • Hi, I came by to promote this, but I don't think it adds anything to the hook to tell us she became a teacher at age 20. I'm also tired of these "first woman" hooks. What do you think about something about her long life, like:
  • ALT1: ... that approaching her 90th birthday, Mamie Garvin Fields sat down to write her memoir of living and working in South Carolina since 1888? Yoninah (talk) 20:54, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
  • The year isn't about how old she was, but how early she was a black teacher. (I don't believe they called it Afro-American back then, though.) More unique imho than longevity. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 23:06, 22 December 2018 (UTC)
Yoninah, I'm sorry you are tired of "first woman" hooks; I'm not, and it doesn't say "first woman", so I'm not sure I get what you mean. I'm also not tired of "first black woman" hooks, by the way. Can we run this with the first hook already, and get it over with? Dr Aaij (talk) 21:29, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
  • OK. Restoring tick per Gerda's review. Yoninah (talk) 22:36, 24 December 2018 (UTC)
