Tasmomedes is a monotypic genus of spiders in the family Dolomedidae containing only the species Tasmomedes eberhardarum. It is endemic to Australia, where it occurs in Victoria and Tasmania.

Taxonomy

[edit]

Dolomedes eberhardarum was described by Embrik Strand in 1913 based on a male type specimen collected in Victoria.[2] In a 2018 review of the family Pisauridae, Robert Raven erected the new genus Tasmomedes for this species, combining it as Tasmomedes eberhardarum. It is the only species in the genus. The name Tasmomedes is a combination of the words Tasmania and Dolomedes, referring to the former placement of T. eberhardarum in Dolomedes and to its prescence on the island of Tasmania.[3] The type specimen is stored in the collection of the Museum Wiesbaden in Germany.[4]

Distribution and habitat

[edit]

Tasmomedes eberhardarum is known only from Victoria and Tasmania. In Tasmania it has been found in buttongrass moorland where no flowing water is present.[3]
