The Zmanim page should discuss the halachic times of day, not be redirected to the Hebrew calendar page. It should address sunrise and sunset, Shaot Zmaniot, etc.

I did so. ypnypn (talk) 01:57, 22 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have assigned initial quality and importance ratings. Please click on the "quality" and "importance" links in the template above concerning definitions.
It's arguable that by definition this article should be "Low" importance. However, I don't think either you or I really believe that its importance is truly low, so I bumped it up. You should try to provide some sources.
Actually, I think you've made a good start. I made a little addition to the lead paragraph(s) of the article as a suggestion as to where you might expand this. For the first half of the article, I would probably start with summaries of different morning opinions, summaries of different evening opinions, and the definition of a sha'ah z'manit. I would conclude the first half of the article with a description of the main disagreement (GR"A vs. M"A). The second half of the article, covering details on z'manim through the day, would then flow quite easily.

Additions to avoid extra redirects

[edit]

Per suggestion in Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2017 February 6, to avoid adding redirects named Sunset (Shkia) &/or Shkia (Sunset) the existing English terms will now also include the 1-word Hebrew term. Spellings conform to the article's text, which don't necessarily conform to chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/526873/jewish/The-Jewish-Day.htm (e.g. Tzet vs. Tzeit) Pi314m (talk) 09:24, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted (AGF). What is it that you want to try to accomplish by this that is not currently possible? I don't understand. If you want there to be a way to enter "Shkia" in the searchbar and have it land in the right place, you can create a shortcut (that nobody will object to) at Shkia that says #REDIRECTZmanim#Sunset. If you want something else, I just don't understand. StevenJ81 (talk) 15:23, 24 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Adding commonly used 1-word identifiers
My goal is to add commonly used 1-word identifiers
I tried
  • ===Daybreak (Alot)===
  • ===Sunrise (Netz)===
  • ===Sunset (Shkiya)===
  • ===Nightfall (Tzet)===
    In part this is based on a suggestion saying
    "... There's no reason the term in parenthesis can't just appear in the body text, as aveilim (mourners)."
I'd like to be able to write something like
They had arrived by Netz
so that it would not be necessary to actually click-through to the Zmanim article,
while at the same time avoiding including both words in the displayed text.
(there are different preferences for .. by Netz (Sunrise) vs. without (Sunrise) etc. This is meant to accommodate both)
ALSO: the 1-word addition uses 1-worders not found as such in the article/the index. Pi314m (talk) 21:11, 26 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]
A few things. (1) Where are you writing something like that? This is English Wikipedia; most of the time we'd want to write They had arrived by sunrise, and if "sunrise" required the context of "Netz", we'd provide a click through. For most people, after all, "Netz" requires context, not merely an incompletely explained synonym. Speaking of which ... (2) Usually we are good with people clicking through, not worried about avoiding that. (3) If you really, really want Netz to come up as a mouseover, then what you want is simply Netz, where the page Netz is a redirect to Zmanim#Sunrise. Need a citation

[edit]

This statement needs a citation, The Geonim and the Vilna Gaon (GR"A) say that the second statement is the correct Halachic time. Where in the Geonim and Vilna Gaon's writings do we find this? 24.190.249.100 (talk) 01:25, 23 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
