William Barr → Bill Barr – WP:COMMONNAME Technical assistance is needed because Bill Barr is currently redirected to William Barr. IceFrappe (talk) 13:12, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

- William Barr → Bill Barr (currently a redirect back to William Barr) – WP:COMMONNAME Technical assistance is needed because Bill Barr is currently redirected to William Barr. IceFrappe (talk) 13:12, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- IceFrappe, I think I count 64 occurrences of "William Barr" in the references section but only 18 for "Bill Barr". I also know him as "Bill Barr", but it seems most sources call him William. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 13:42, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- Hi. A quick Google search appears that the overwhelming majority of reputable sources and news articles are calling him Bill. For example, [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9] Most of the references cited in the articles seem to be from the early 1990s (when he served as Attorney General under George HW Bush) and when he was initially nominated by Trump in late 2018/early 2019. During those instances, he was usually referred to either William Barr or William P. Barr. Regards IceFrappe (talk) 18:54, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- Not uncontroversial, there was a previous RM Dr. Vogel (talk) 14:28, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- Seemed like the previous RM was a move was from William P. Barr to William Barr and was done with 100% support and no controversy. I suppose William P. Barr was his WP:COMMONNAME in the 19990s, then William Barr when Trump nominated him in December 2018, and then Bill Barr has now become his WP:COMMONNAME per [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15] [16] [17] [18]. Regards IceFrappe (talk) 18:58, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- I see what you're saying, and this may well pass an RM, but I think there is enough evidence out there that this can't be processed as an uncontroversial move. Dr. Vogel (talk) 19:06, 6 July 2022 (UTC)

- It's probably correct to move. Btw, as a page mover I (or any other page mover) could technically perform the move, but I'd like to wait for further input/consensus first. — Alexis Jazz (talk or ping me) 20:33, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- Fair point. ThanksIceFrappe (talk) 06:01, 7 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose Not really seeing a preference for "Bill" in sources, most news articles of the last week or so lean William. William is also his own preference for his books, e.g. One Damn Thing After Another: Memoirs of an Attorney General. Zaathras (talk) 21:14, 6 July 2022 (UTC)
- I don't know how relevant his own memoir is. Using the full name with middle initial seems to be the norm for those kind of books. For example, all of Donald Trump's books are listed under "Donald J. Trump", but it doesn't make Donald J. his common name. In fact, there was a pretty RM previous RM that successfully moved this page from William P. Barr to William Barr.IceFrappe (talk) 06:00, 7 July 2022 (UTC)
- Oppose Quick search seems to show William as quite prevalent - about 50/50 between the two. Given that there's no clear preference, I would think it best to keep to his full name. | MK17b | (talk) 02:48, 7 July 2022 (UTC)
