[edit]I have redirected the entry Will_Scarlett to this page. --Avery W. Krouse 07:23, August 19, 2005 (UTC)
Whoever wrote the current entry (current as of Nov. 22, 2005 - anyway) seems to be working from an uncredited, specific version. The story as presented has much in common with the version in Pyle's novel and the ballad Robin Hood and Will Scarlet (also known as Robin Hood Newly Reviv'd). But in those stories, Will's real name is "Young Gamwell" or "Will Gamwell" (in Pyle).
There are many variant versions to Will's last name in the early ballads: Scarlet, Scarlock, Scathelock. While presumably they originally were the same character, this is no longer always the case. For example, in Howard Pyle's novel Scathelocke exists as a separate character from Scarlet. The same is true in Anthony Munday's Elizabethan play The Downfall of Robert, Earl of Huntington where the two Wills are half-brothers.
Robin of Sherwood makes Scathelock Will Scarlet's real name, however.
Traditionally
[edit]Traditionally -- that is, in the traditional ballads -- most of Robin Hood's band are not detailed enough so you can tell their ages -- nor is Will Scarlet made younger than most of them. Nor is red silk traditional.
