Happy to take this one on. I have added a few standard templates that were missing (not connected with this nomination). Amitchell125 (talk) 20:21, 13 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Review

[edit]

Lead section / general comments that apply throughout

[edit]
  • Replace the link in the caption with {{Ill|Galičica National Park|mk|Национален парк Галичицаmk}}.
  • by the Government – clarify this by amending to ‘by the North Macedonian Government’.
    • Done
  • There are several missed opportunities to include images in the article – for instance, at the top there could be a set of representative images. I have commented "No image" where I think a picture would be useful.
  • Link topography (here and elsewhere in the article’s main body where the words first appear).
    • Done
  • Unlink fish; plant (common terms, see MOS:OL). Other common words to consider unlinking – wildlife; insects; flies; landlocked; hunted; pollution; mammal; reptile. (here and elsewhere in the article where they might be linked).
    • Done except for flies, which is in a list with other blue links.

1 Environment

[edit]
  • Replace zonobiomes / orobiomes with 'biomes' (linked).
    • Done
  • divided into 8 - ‘divided into eight’ (MOS).
    • Done along with another instance
  • 35 rivers – write as ‘Thirty-five rivers’ to avoid starting a sentence with a numeral. The same issue occurs elsewhere, e.g. in the Fungi and Animals sections.
    • Added "Its" beforehand, to not start with a number at all.
  • The map would imo be better used in the Diversity and endemism hotspots section, where the lakes are mentioned directly. I would incorporate a topographical map of the country at the top of this section as well as a landscape image (here). If no suitable map is available, I'll happily produce one.
This map is easy to amend if you see the need (e.g. the river names could be added). AM
  • Link habitat; temperate (Temperate climate); Precipitation; river basin (Drainage basin); reservoir; geological (Geology); gorge (Canyon).
    • Done
  • 988,835 hectares (2,443,460 acres) of the country – I would use the same units here as in with the rest of the section, i.e. use km2.
    • Done and further tweaks
  • Unlink agricultural (common term).
    • Done

2 Plants

[edit]
  • Amend extinct from the county to ‘extinct in North Macedonia’.
    • Done
  • Either English or Latin terms need to be written consistently – e.g. you have in this section oak (no Latin name given) and Fagus (no common English word (‘beech’) given).
    • Changed to beech, among other changes that see English terms used for larger groups, and latin terms used for individual species.

3 Fungi

[edit]
  • Link taxa (Taxon).
    • Done
  • No image?
    • Image added, not from the Balkans but prominent in new source

4 Animals

[edit]
  • The text following the title needs its own title (e.g. ‘Invertebrates’).
    • I suspect there may be a better way to frame things with the right sources that would avoid this, but done

4.1 Arthropods

[edit]
  • This section seems disproportionately large in comparison with the size of the vertebrate sections. Is all the detailed information needed?
    • There are disproportionately more arthropods than there are vertebrates, so the vertebrate sections are actually much more detailed with regards to their number. If it does need to come down, I will have to look into what subarticle structure might be appropriate.
  • of the country's arthropods - ‘of the country's species of arthropods’?
    • Done
  • Link families (Family (biology)); endemism.
    • Done

4.2 Fish

[edit]
  • due to taxonomic uncertainty – please explain what is being referred to here, or to rewrite it in simpler terms.
    • Rewritten and wikilink added
  • No image?
    • Done

4.6 Mammals

[edit]
  • Duplicated links to remove from this section (duplinks): Balkan snow vole; European ground squirrel; Balkan lynx; chamois.
    • Removed two, kept the ones which were dupes from the insect section, as they seems more relevant here.
  • No image?
    • Added a stamp image I see you've cleaned up nicely

5 Algae

[edit]
  • Link diatom.
    • Done
  • I’m not convinced that the table is a good idea here - the information seems excessively detailed for the article.
    • Hidden, in the hope that one day it will find a home

6 Diversity and endemism hotspots

[edit]

7 Relationship with people

[edit]
  • I would replace the title, perhaps with ‘Human activity’.
    • Changed to "Human influence"
  • Duplink – denar.
    • Done
  • I would suggest the poaching paragraph is moved to the following section.
    • Done

7.1 Threats

[edit]
  • Duplink - Lysimachia thyrsiflora.
    • Done
  • Convert 120 million cubic metres.
    • Done
  • Assessing endemism can be tricky – needs to be amended, as tricky is too vague or informal for an encyclopaedia article.
    • Done in next section
  • Move the link to invasive to where it first appears in the text (in the Plants section).
    • I have added it there, but kept here as this is the section where it is most directly relevant
  • Link Hydropower.
    • Done

7.2 Conservation

[edit]
  • Duplinks - Bern Convention; Gentiana pneumonanthe; Ranunculus lingua.
    • Kept Bern Convention link due to its most direct relevance, others removed
[edit]
  • (not GAN, but my opinion) At 13 paragraphs, this section is by far the largest in the article. It should at some point be imo split off into its own separate article (perhaps 'Environmental law in North Macedonia'), with a summary version here. Thoughts?
    • Certainly a viable topic, and there are definitely parts here I think could be removed if a main article existed.
  • Duplinks - European Union; Habitats Directive; Birds Directive; Mavrovo National Park.
    • Done
  • even obliges – why even?
    • An imposition on people rather than the government, but you're right to note that and it is now removed
  • under Article 43 paragraph 2 – this level of detail is perhaps not needed here.
    • Removed via hidden note given the main article idea suggested above
  • which plays a significant role in environmental legislation is redundant and can can be removed for the sake of conciseness.
    • Done
  • Link Aichi targets ((Convention on Biological Diversity).
    • I linked the existing text as a redirect. The lack of a specific article on the Aichi targets is a surprising hole in our coverage!

More comments to follow after I have spot-checked the references. Amitchell125 (talk) 18:37, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

On hold

[edit]

I'm putting the article on hold for a week until 26 June to allow time for the issues raised to be addressed. Regards, Amitchell125 (talk) 18:52, 18 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the review. I will look at the issues raised. Two quick general points. On overall balance, the arthropod section is much larger than the vertebrate section because there are just so many arthropods. When writing this I was unsure how to balance taxonomic representation against familiarity representation. At the moment the balance is that while the arthropod section is longer, vertebrate classes have their own lv3 subheaders against the lv3 subheader for the entire arthropod phylum. I can chop and change if needed, although it may require some subarticle creation. Regarding images, when selecting for this article I used exclusively images taken in North Macedonia (assuming you believe their commons descriptions). Where an image is lacking, that is because I did not find one from the country. However, I will check again, and take from elsewhere if they would improve the article. CMD (talk) 09:41, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Understood—but for any of the animals that are endemic in the Balkans, images of some of them would be perfectly OK in this article. Thoughts? Amitchell125 (talk) 16:42, 19 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Amitchell125: Sorry for the delay and thank you for all the comments. They have been variously actioned, with replies above. I added a few different images, and regarding the specific map request I derived File:Map of the main lakes and rivers of North Macedonia-en.svg from the file you recommended, which is open to further editing/input. Passing
