The name was suggested to May by Ernest Albert Atherton, youngest son of pioneer John Atherton and former Minister of Mines and MP (MLA) for Chillagoe electorate. He spent over ten years in the Chillagoe area with shops previously; that must be where he got his Wakaman name from. Wakaman tribal land does not include any land near Walkamin.
