I've seen several reversions after Wali's real name was added to the article. I don't really care one way or the other: if he wants to stay anonymous, that's fine by me. But I do want to point out that the cat was out of the bag a long time ago, and there are plenty of references to be found online even if some sources have since redacted his name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.14.82.155 (talk) 21:32, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The other thing you may want to consider is whether the subject of this article is sufficiently notable to warrant an entry at all. If he is, then people will find out his name if they really want to (seriously, you don't think the FSB couldn't find out if they wanted to? On the other hand, if he's not sufficiently note-worthy, then just delete the entire article, and any issues with his real name being shown goes away. 74.14.82.155 (talk) 21:38, 24 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
2 things : 1- The FSB isn't the only threat. The more you expose the guy, the more you have any kind of people who can connect the dots and do harm. Others sources expose him ? Ok, but we're not obligated to be assholes too. 2- The notability and the real name are two differents questions with weak links between them. This is a translation of a discussion on the French Wikipedia Talk page of Wali. The real name and an approximate birth date of Wali have been exposed on English and French Wikipedia, and Wikidata. I deleted the informations on all three wikis and asked for a protection and an oversight of the history on all of them. This was accepted on French Wikipedia and Wikidata (2 weeks there), but refused on English Wikipedia (see the email copied below). I also contacted the Emergency team about this (see the other copied email) I must say that I'm pretty surprise by the insensibility and the indifference/apathy of all the involved contributors here. As I said, I can't assure 24/7 surveillance on these pages and I'm tired to try to do it. So I put all these informations here and if something happen to his wife or his new born child, you'll have to think on how much blood you have on your hands. emails about the oversight :
Hi,
The real name of the sniper Wali have been given on the English Wikipedia page dedicated to him https://en.m.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wali_(sniper) . This can be very dangerous for him or his family cause he fight in Ukraine against Russian army. I ask you to oversight the history were his real name appear.
Dear Simon Villeneuve,
We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Unfortunately, the edits associated with your request cannot be suppressed under our policy <http://en.wiki.x.io/wiki/Wikipedia:Oversight>. While I am sympathetic to your concern, it would appear that the link between this person's nom de guerre and real name has been widely publicised; and he has even published a book linking the two. Thank you for sharing your concerns and please contact us again if you have any in the future.
Sincerely.
exchanges with the Emergency team :
Hi,
The Canadian soldier known as "Wali" have an entry on French Wikipedia and Wikidata since March 21 and on English Wikipedia since March 23. Acting in Good Faith, many editors clumsily have puted his real name and birthdate on these 3 pages. I personnaly deleted it on all the pages and have asked to oversight the history where these informations appeared. This man is actually fighting in Ukraine against Russian Army and giving large and free access to theses informations can put him and is family in danger (he have a wife and a new born baby).
I asked on Wikidata to protect the item and they do it for 2 weeks. I think that this will not be sufficient and I can't watch this entry on all Wikipedia and Wikidata 24/7 and ask each time to remove the personnal data. I don't know what you can do in this case but I'm pretty sure that it is not the first time that some informations must be keep confidential and must not appear on wikis. So I think you must have some plan to deal with this.
Hello Simon Villeneuve,

Whereas we acknowledge that this incident has caused you distress, we would like to point out that the emergency@ reporting channel is strictly reserved for imminent threats of harm (to self or others). We have carefully reviewed the details provided and unfortunately your concern does not fall under the category of imminent threats of harm. Consequently, this incident cannot be handled through the emergency@ channel. If you have questions about engaging with the Wikimedia community on other issues, please contact info@wikimedia.org. Best regards.
I am not aware of how this person meets notability guidelines. Sure, there are a few news articles on him, but any notable items seem to be referring to him being a skilled person fighting in the Invasion with few accomplishments in doing so. I think it violates WP:NOTTEMPORARYKD0710 (talk) 21:23, 25 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
