Source: Meijering finds the compensations and fines abnormally high in the Frisian context, and I agree. He suggests that these stringent rules might reflect a general and increasing neglect of the law.
ALT2: ... that a series of agreements at the Upstalsboom in 1323 began with a legally-binding defense pact between the Seven Sealands? Source: The first clause: if any ruler intends to damage or bring shame to any sealand, be it bishop or count, we will all jointly give each other council or assistance and we will fight with our lives and goods in order to uphold our freedom.
ALT3: ... that the assembly at the Upstalsboom is the only one known to have occurred between all Seven Sealands of medieval Frisia? Source: There were many such meeting places in the various Frisian lands, but we know of only one supraregional assembly location, an elevation in the landscape not far from Aurich (today in Ostfriesland, Niedersachsen), called Upstallesbam NB: this source doesn't mention the Seven Sealands explicitly, but the treaty signed at the Upstalsboom mentions all seven being present.
