Dounreay

[edit]

Surely 'proof of concept' for a fast reactor is only achieved when it is shown that the fuel cycle can be closed - ie when a significant quantitities of fissile material can be economically extracted from the breeder blanket. (I dimly recollect that only small demonstration quanities were extracted from DFR). Electricity generation alone is not the defining concept. UKAEA

[edit]

The reference to 'fusion' is inappropriate (that only refers to bombs). Most of the UKAEA's work involved nuclear 'fission'. Best to refer only to 'nuclear'. 92.235.169.59 (talk) 09:19, 8 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am surprised how scant and abridged is this whole article on UKAEA. The summary is reasonable but subsequently there is little detail on the history of the UKAEA, it's areas of operation, background to the various divestments and privatisations etc. An organisation which employed 41,000 people at its peak and has now been scaled back solely to operate the fusion programme deserves a much more thorough and insightful narrative. Springfields

[edit]

I'm surprised that there is no Wikipedia article on the AEA uranium processing facility at Springfields near Preston. Perhaps it had another name and an article only exists under that title?Jimjamjak (talk) 14:24, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have since created the article on Springfields
