Domestic Cup winners

[edit]

Is there official confirmation from UEFA that all Cup winners go into this competition as stated in the distribution table. UEFA's access list suggests it will be the lowest ranked qualifier. At present the Cup winners are currently treated as the highest UEL qualifiers.

Thinking about it (as the editor who wrote that in the article), you're probably right. Good spot. That should probably be fixed. Falastur2 Talk 19:04, 5 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

European League

[edit]

It should be mentioned in the history section of this article (and related articles) that creations like this tournament are part of a push to create a "European Premier League". This ridiculous creation is the latest one of UEFA's answers, over the last 30 years, to threats from the wealthiest clubs in Europe to break away and form a private league. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:BB6:701C:8758:E0BE:99D8:2648:B5BB (talk) 15:05, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is, that's not true at all. Obviously the idea of a European Super League have been around for years and years, but the recent talk of a 3-tier European Super/Premier/whatever league has only surfaced in the last few months. This competition was confirmed last year, but had been publicly planned for about a year or so before this. This is also a UEFA creation, and for the longest time UEFA has been resisting the idea of a Super League - again, it was only after this competition was announced that UEFA started saying that they were actually willing to negotiate with the major clubs to discuss their ideas for a reworking of the UEFA competitions. If you read this article, the whole point of this competition when it was announced was to give teams from lower-ranked competitions (the likes of Scotland, Poland, Slovakia, etc, not France or Italy) more access to UEFA competition, whereas the three-tier Super League system is very much around just picking the 60 best teams in Europe and putting them into league-style competitions, with basically no avenue at all for smaller teams to ever access the competition. This competitions are simply not rooted in the same idea at all. The only linking factor whatsoever is they both involve the idea of a third-tier UEFA competition. It's like arguing that the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was part of that plan, too.
In honesty, if (and I hope it never happens) the 3-tier, promotion/relegation-based European Super/Premier League does come about, this competition will likely be announced as totally scrapped, or at the very least it will only continue to exist in the sense that, like the Ship of Theseus, the name has changed, the rules have changed, the teams have changed, everything has changed, but it still technically exists as a third-tier competition. Falastur2 Talk 17:57, 14 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You acknowledge that the idea of a European Super League has been around for years but claim that this ridiculous competition is not another byproduct of that pressure or anyway related to it. This competition does not provide more access to clubs from smaller leagues, it pretends to do so. UEFA gave more Champions League access to the bigger leagues in 2018-19 and made it almost impossible for smaller clubs to qualify for the CL group stages (4 qualifying rounds instead of 3) [1]. UEFA made that change because they are afraid of Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester United/City pulling away and creating a private league. They have made many other structural changes over the last 25 years for the same reasons, fear and money. When you take more bread from the smaller leagues you have to throw them back a few breadcrumbs. This tournament is breadcrumbs, at best.

OK. Falastur2 Talk 17:27, 19 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

Every time I come back to this UECL article, someone has changed the 'current edition' hyperlink so that it only links to the qualifiers and play-off stages. This is not useful, as all relevant information from that page is on the main article for 2021–22 UEFA Europa Conference League. Looking at the editing history, it is always done by User:The Optimistic One. Please stop reverting it. It is not useful; most people who come to the main article for UEFA Conference League will be looking for the current season, and will be wanting a quick summary of the competition (eg who will be playing who on what day for the qualifying rounds). The main article for 2021–22 UEFA Europa Conference League serves this purpose. If someone wants to see who scored in the 2nd qualifying round for Connah's Quay Nomads, they will be able to find this on the qualifying rounds article. However, the main article is the one most people are likely to be looking for, due to its brevity, so it should remain as the hyperlink.

Group Stage being replaced by league phase in 2024-25 competition

[edit]

Please incorporate this change in the article.

https://www.uefa.com/insideuefa/news/0268-1213f7aa85bb-d56154ff8fe8-1000--uefa-announces-new-format-for-club-competitions-to-be-introd/

Taking the total number of teams from 32 to 36 in the UEFA Champions League, the biggest change will see a transformation from the traditional group stage to a single league stage including all participating teams.

Similar format changes will also be applied to the UEFA Europa League (8 matches in the league stage) and UEFA Europa Conference League (6 matches in the league stage). Subject to further discussions and agreements, these two competitions may also be expanded to a total of 36 teams each in the league stage. Eric Nelson (talk) 12:43, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Merge proposal

[edit]
The following discussion is closed. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section. A summary of the conclusions reached follows.
The result of this discussion was Don't merge per WP:SNOW as there are clearly going g to be multiple finals in the future and merging serves little value when a split will happen in the near future if such a merge occurs. PicturePerfect666 (talk) 16:54, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I propose merging List of UEFA Europa Conference League finals into UEFA Europa Conference League. The list of finals has only two entries and routine coverage. This list is better covered in a section of this article for the time-being, at least say five finals? The existence of such list is simply not justified with two entires. I am nominating this per the @Snowflake91: suggestion on the talk page. Idiosincrático (talk) 07:04, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I don’t think merging is necessary. There is sufficient scope for a separate article, and although only two finals have been played to date, there are four more scheduled as per UEFA’s club competition cycles. Also, User:Snowflake91 made that suggestion nearly two years ago! Their objection was not addressed at the time and is even less valid now. – PeeJay 10:50, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support merge - pretty much everything in this article bar the results/venues/attendances of the two finals is in the main article anyway -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 11:10, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose As PeeJay states, there are at least four more finals scheduled in the future and likely to be more after that. The objection was valid two years ago, but I don't see how it is now with the list only going to increase in length. NapHit (talk) 11:49, 29 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Opinion - I don't give a support or oppose on this issue but to be honest, I feel too early for create this list, but it is neccessary at the future. If it is being merged, it will be split on the time being. KyleRGiggs (talk) 09:00, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - There is no need to delete a page through merging which simply be split again in the near future. What is the bright line of a number of finals? Clearly, there can’t be one as it will vary from person to person. So for major competitions like more than one in my opinion you get a list page. Otherwise, you get arguments over complete nonsense and navel-gazing rubbish. PicturePerfect666 (talk) 00:16, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose per replies Okmrman (talk) 20:45, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose IMO a "list" needs two or more items, and this meets that criteria with the past finals alone. I agree with the replies that point out that this list would be recreated soon if it were to be deleted.

Abbreviation for UEFA Conference League

[edit]

Is there an accepted abbreviation for the forthcoming name UEFA Conference League that distinguishes it from the UEFA Champions League? The abbreviation "UCO" has been put forth by KyleRGiggs in a table at UEFA_coefficient, and that might well be correct, but I haven't found independent evidence of it. So, I thought we should have a brief discussion here. Thank you. Coining (talk) 12:16, 3 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

UEFA will provide one in due course. – PeeJay 21:05, 13 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
UECL is the accepted code, UCL is the Champions League, and UEL is the Europa League. As can be see here PicturePerfect666 (talk) 17:01, 16 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The name of the competition is changing to "UEFA Conference League" (UCL) from next season, which is why User:Coining is asking about an alternative abbreviation. – PeeJay 16:37, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think "UCOL" is gonna be used officially, or it gonna stick with the "UECL" as for "UEFA Conference League" for convenience purpose. EdhyRa (talk) 03:48, 24 May 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I am looping in @ThatStatMan into this discussion, as he has updated the UEFA coefficient article ([version comparison]) to use the abbreviation "CON" instead of "ECL" for the UEFA Conference League. This may well be the right approach, but I continue to wonder whether anyone has seen something official from UEFA to indicate what abbreviation will be the generally accepted one. Coining (talk) 01:16, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My vote would be to settle on either CO (to distinguish it from CL or EL) or some choice of CON/UCO/CNF to go with UCL and UEL. UECL is no longer accurate and should be dropped. Thank you for including me. ThatStatMan (talk) 01:34, 2 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
