Third Battle of Brega
[edit]Would this count as a "battle" if there didn't appear to be any opposition by Gaddafi's forces?? 50.37.98.31 (talk) 18:39, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
- Agreed. There didn't seem to be a battle according to any reports I know of. 140.247.244.113 (talk) 18:53, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
- I support a deletion of this article. Since it looks like there was no battle at all. EkoGraf (talk) 19:27, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
Deaths are unknown or uncounted, not absent. As far as we know. There could have been vehicle deconstruction. The advancement happened fast due to retreating Gaddafi forces Zenithfel (talk) 19:30, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
By all accounts there was no battle, nothing, absolutely nothing. The rebels just ran through Brega without any resistance according to every news media that are reporting the event. EkoGraf (talk) 19:44, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
Should not be removed. This reliable news article claims has footage and claims there was a battle.75.72.35.253 (talk) 19:52, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[[1]]

- User 75.72.35.253, sorry to point this out but that video is from the battle two weeks ago. :) Qouting the article France 24 has published an incredible 10-minute video following the Libyan rebels into battle in Brega, filmed several weeks ago. EkoGraf (talk) 19:59, 26 March 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, no battle at all. This article is pointless until Gaddafi Loyals probe otherwise. I guess the next battle will be near Bin Jawad or Sirte. Hegmn (talk) 05:15, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
The capture of Gen. Bilgasim Al-Ganga should be included in the Battle of Ajdabiya article when this one is deleted. 82.239.137.62 (talk) 15:41, 28 March 2011 (UTC)
Fourth Battle fo Brega
[edit]I recomend not to delete this article for one important reason, the second battle of brega ended in a pro-Gadhafi victory, this(the thrid) its a rebel victory, 2 days ago rebels were just wining and advancing eastwards . It seems that today the progadhafi forces will capture the string of coastal cities again in a renewed offensive from Bin Jawad to the east once more. And fighting in brega for the fourth time will erupt. So we need a third battle of brega(with the rebels wining)so there could exist a fourth battle of brega(if it takes place and the progadhafi forces win).So there would be no contradiction of the process of the sew saw battles. Every one battle with switching sides.for example:
1stBattle of Brega: rebel victory
2nd Batle of Brega: progadhafi victory
3rd Battle of Brega:rebel victory
4th Battle of Brega:(If it takes place )
If the 3rd battle of brega does not exist and the progradhafi forces win the fourth battle, how they could have taken the city 2 times consequtively?--190.118.9.11 (talk) 00:17, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
- The was no "battle" of Brega on 26th March. If anything, the content shall be changed to reflect the events during the pro-Gaddafi offensive since 29th march, the recapture can be mentioned the same way as with the 2nd battle of Bin Jawad.Ihosama (talk) 17:44, 30 March 2011 (UTC)
A Different Battle
[edit]The deletion request should be removed as this article now refers to a different battle (31 March - present) as opposed to the previous 'battle' following Ajdabiya. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.22.8.106 (talk) 18:46, 2 April 2011 (UTC)
Engagements around/in New Brega?
[edit]- Removed former comments on Brega Uni as they would only confuse the matter.Ihosama (talk) 15:24, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
Thanks to EkoGraf's latest update it is no clear we have essentially 5 more-less distinct settlements:
- Western outskirts == Brega seaport - includes port, industrial buildings and oil worker housings
- Southern suburb == Southern Brega - includes several industrial buildings, about a mile south of the Seaport
- "Central" Brega == Old Brega - old town, about 2 miles east of the Seaport
- Brega University - the Uni complex of about 1x1km overlooking the highway, about a mile east of Old Brega, strategic position enabling direct control of the highway
- "Brega" == New Brega - a new housing settlement about 2x2km in size, on coast, about 5 miles north-east of Old Brega
As it would appear, when the Rebels claim to "control" Brega they are most likely talking about the "new" Brega settlement ignoring the Old town and seaport (which they probably do not consider being directly part of "Brega").
When I have some more time I will draw up a map of the area to allow for use of specific orientation points in the article.Ihosama (talk) 15:23, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
A map would be great. And yes it seems every time the rebels claim to have captured Brega they are actualy talking only about the eastern part of the town, New Brega. And by all acounts the loyalists eject them from there by the end of each day thanks to them controling the university which has a strategic position over the highway. EkoGraf (talk) 18:02, 4 April 2011 (UTC)
- Bad news, time's up so no map from me.:( Hopefully someone will fill the slack.Ihosama (talk) 11:00, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
Map
[edit]A map would be very handy for this article, so people reading it can get an idea of where the areas talked about are located. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.141.61.64 (talk) 00:09, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
Victory?
[edit]The rebels were certainly thrown out of the town after the morning artillery strikes. However, if the Saaiqa 36 Battalion did indeed attack Gaddafist forces during the afternoon, wouldn't that mean that the battle is still ongoing? The rebels have been repulsed from the city on numerous occasions during the battle; we should wait for confirmation to see if this retreat is indeed the final one of the battle. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 22:09, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
Well...maybe...not sure. We wait until tomorrow. If the rebels attack the town again tomorrow than we change to ongoing. However, as it is, the fighting is a full 30 kilometers (by some accounts 40 kilometers) east from the city, the farthest since the start of the battle. Also, the report about the 36th battalion came only from the rebels, and that report also claimed that they pushed out the loyalists to the west of Brega. Nobody else reported this. So I don't know how credible that report is. EkoGraf (talk) 23:35, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- I moved to ongoing. let's keep all the fighting in/around Brega in this article. Until Loyalists attack Ajdabiya IMO the fight is still for the Brega (area) thus justifying the Battle of Brega moniker.Ihosama (talk) 18:45, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
3rd? 4th Battles?
[edit]Isn't this being a bit dramatic? These 'skirmishes' (if they could even be classified as that) don't really merit being called battles, let alone adding a '2nd', '3rd' etc to them. They are hardly 2nd Bull Run or 3rd Battle of Ypres! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Richytps (talk • contribs) 23:42, 5 April 2011 (UTC)
- This is the face of modern warfare. No massive armies killing hundreds upon thousands of each other at a time, just two relatively small forces fighting for key strategic points. ~~ Lothar von Richthofen (talk) 00:02, 6 April 2011 (UTC)
- Exactly, due to the modernisation of wars military battles today result in no more than a few dozen to a hundred killed. In any case, don't start that again, when this war started we already had numereous discussions on this subject and concenssus was that these were to be called battles. Infobox "Result"
[edit]Please note that Template:Infobox military conflict#Parameters states against "result" that "this parameter may use one of two standard terms: "X victory" or "Inconclusive"." The infobox has been amended to reflect this. Please read the template "result" guidance in full before amending or reverting. It would probably be best to discuss any proposed change here first to seek consensus. Thanks. Gog the Mild (talk) 12:22, 26 March 2024 (UTC)
