Propaganda
[edit]The article appears to be essentially Scottish Government and SNP propaganda
I am far from clear that it should exist as a Wikipedia article

I can't disagree that it is a rather weak article, but given that we have a Portal:Sustainable development the concept is surely sound. In practice some of it is info no longer needed on various other articles and there has been scant attention to properly developing it. I think the only reason you are seeing it as ScoGov propaganda is that that the SNP have been in power during the time the article has been written - a fair few of the issues commenced under the previous administration as is mentioned in the lead. There is in fact a large array of additional public sector initiatives that could be added. By all means suggest improvements. Ben MacDui 18:55, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
I remain doubtful about the value of the article, and I am taking a similar view of Sustainable Development Strategy in Canada
There is a respectable concept or principle of sustainable development, which should be covered by Wikipedia
I have yet to see, however, any objective means of measuring of its existence in any particular country
I would be equally dubious about articles called Democracy in China, Democracy in the United States and Democracy in Afghanistan

I agree that precision is difficult, in part because we do not know, and probably can't know the limits that the Earth's ecosystems have until they start to fail. Nonetheless the general idea is fairly simply. The Scottish government state that "The goal of sustainable development is to enable all people throughout the world to satisfy their basic needs and enjoy a better quality of life without compromising the quality of life of future generations." All too often "sustainable" is used to mean "a little less damaging" but I don't doubt that good article status or better is possible for this article. Ben MacDui 13:04, 30 January 2010 (UTC)
I note the Scottish government seems to have a minister for 'finance and sustainable growth'
Given this commitment to 'sustainbale growth' (something all governments seem to have been aiming for since GDP's were first measured), it is not clear to me that anything they say about 'sustainable development' can be taken seriously
That the Scottish government has some definition of, specifically, 'sustainable development' does not mean that there is any in Scotland

The article is not predicated on whether or not the government are acting sustainably. As we know from recent press statements, SEPA for example are falling short. If you think there are elements of the text that do not amount to sustainable development by some reasonable definition, feel free to suggest changes. Ben MacDui 19:06, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
