Comment on Final Play of Super Bowl X
[edit]Greetings ....
This is a personal comment - and "Just Suppose" - about the last play in Super Bowl X.
In watching the NFL Films official highlights of this game, it is plainly obvious that Pittsburgh's Glen Edwards does intercept Staubach's pass in the end zone (about two yards inside). But rather than immediately going down on a knee, Edwards instead starts running out of the end zone, back up the field, ball in hand. Eventually, he comes down to a knee (at about the Steeler 33), with the ball still in his hands and is touched by the Dallas Cowboys' Blaine Nye (# 61). The play is dead, game over, Steelers win.
Now for the "Just Suppose" ....
Suppose that Edwards, while running up the field, loses the ball before being downed. A Cowboy picks the ball up and runs it back into the Steeler endzone.
Question - Would that not have been a winning touchdown for the Cowboys?
Look forward to a reply. Thank you for your time.

UPDATE: 2-09-2025
According to this pro-football-reference-dot-com play-by-play recap of Super Bowl X, Glen Edwards' interception is described as follows "Staubach pass incomplete to D. Pearson, intercepted (in end zone) by Glen Edwards and returned for 35 yards."
This probably would confirm that the play was live for as long as Edwards was not downed, and that a fumble recovery and runback for a touchdown by the Cowboys was a real possibility.
NOTE -- This update replaces one I made years before when a then-used USA TODAY reference link was active.

Artificial turf
[edit]Super Bowl X was the third consecutive Super Bowl to be played on artificial turf, and that "record" has not been equaled since. The only other consecutive Super Bowls on artificial turf were V and VI, and XV and XVI, the latter also being the only time the Super Bowl has been hosted consecutively in domed stadiums.RomeoMike (talk) 02:56, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
