Relation to "Sopher" Surname?

[edit]

I was wondering if the surname Sopher is in any way related to the word Sofer. I have done a little bit of research and found that there are, in fact, people with this surname in the middle east, and Israel in particular, but I have yet to draw any conclusive evidence about the meaning of the name. Hope this isn't too off-topic, of course. 24.40.172.245 05:41, 22 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page split proposal

[edit]

What would people think to dividing this page into two:

  • Sofrut - containing the details of the texts, the writing, the methods, the tools and materials, some of the halacha as relates to the practice.
  • Sofer (scribe) - containing the details of current and historical scribes (not much there at the moment on this, but it'd be nice) and the details of who may be a scribe and how they become so. Could incorporate list of other scribes with wikipedia articles.

Currently there's a bit of a mishmash, which might get messier as it gets bigger. I don't propose any information need be lost in the split, and realise that the two pages will need to remain fairly heavily interlinked. Pseudomonas(talk) 15:09, 30 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ink

[edit]

It doesn't appear that Sefer Torah or this page have a section on the formula used for the ink; here are some links: http://www.ctc-torah.org/2009/07/the-ingredients-part-iii-dyo-ink/ http://www.chabad.org/library/howto/wizard_cdo/aid/339592/jewish/The-Ink.htm Do all ST"M have the same ink requirements?

Source-Verify on Commandment

[edit]

The major Jewish law (Halakha) pertaining to "Sofrut," the practice of scribal arts, is in the Talmud in the tractate Maseket Sofrim. In the Torah's 613 Mitzvot (commandments) the 613th[1] is that every Jew should write a Sefer Torah in their lifetime.(Deut. 31:19)[verification needed]

From my reading of Deut. 31:19, it's not immediately clear that every Jew must complete a Sefer Torah. Further, this would imply that every Jew must be a Sofer, which seems like quite an accomplishment in and of itself, and it would mean that, barring destruction, there would be full-to-overflowing Arks full of Torahs everywhere you turned. However, to put it mildly, I am not an expert on these matters, so I'd like someone else to verify the source before I go rudely deleting anything. What do they copy from?

[edit]

Do sofrim copy only from material also hand-written by a sofer, or may they use printed editions as source? -- 92.226.26.35 (talk) 18:50, 24 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
