Shirley's maiden name is believed to be MACHON, a well known Guernsey surname. This would indicate that she not only grew up in Guernsey, but was also born there.
Her first husband was Peter Donald Turner, with whom she immigrated to Australia.
Both her mother and grandmother were artists in Guernsey.
NOTE: Guernsey is a Crown Dependency of Britain, it is NOT part of England. It is a self governing country. Shirley's Nationality when born in Guernsey was British.

Further note: Looking at the tree on Ancestry owned by Catherine Turner (who appears to be the granddaughter of Shirley Barber nee Machon and her first husband Peter Donald Turner), Shirley's father was not Ben Machon. He was Charles Edward Machon born 1903 in Guernsey and died 1990 in Wangaratta, Victoria, Australia. Her mother was Eileen Marjorie Kent born 1903 in Kent England - death place unknown. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 182.239.230.217 (talk) 04:51, 15 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
