Renaming "Third Battle"
[edit]This article was previously titled "Second Battle of Dalton." In fact, however, according to Eicher & Eicher, Civil War High Command 908, it was the third battle of Dalton. The disambiguation page "Battle of Dalton" failed to account for the true second battle of Dalton, May 12, 1864, early in Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. This battle of Dalton is sufficiently important that it is commemorated before Resaca on the Sherman monument in Washington DC. It would be nice if someone with the capability to do it could start a second battle of Dalton page for the May 12, 1864 engagement -- that title is now taken and simply redirects to third battle of Dalton Hartfelt (talk) 17:53, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- I think you should be careful to get consensus before renaming articles. Although Eicher has a list of actions, they don't necessarily represent notable events. The NPS CWSAC classification is what we usually use for creating Wikipedia battle articles. Phisterer, in the Statistical Record of the Armies of the United States, does not list it as a troop engagement. In the ORs (SERIES I--VOLUME XXXVIII/1 [S# 72], p. 52), it is listed as "May 9-13, Demonstration against Dalton, with combats near Varnell's Station (9th and 12th) and at Dalton (13th)" and I haven't found further descriptions of anything significant. Unless you can come up with a real description of a battle for Dalton II, you should reverse the name change. Hal Jespersen (talk) 19:55, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
- One other comment. I just noticed that Kennedy lists a battle GA024, which is not on the CWSAC website, called Dalton III, part of Hood' TN campaign. Hal Jespersen (talk) 20:00, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
Hal, OK, I did not know I was stirring up trouble. Hartfelt (talk) 20:48, 5 February 2009 (UTC)
