It is definitely pier. Them calling it a wharf has always bugged me. I read on local wiki.org, “ The Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf is called a "wharf" due to an error written in the bond measure.” And am trying to find a proper citation for that.

Wharf goes along the shore, parallel to the water

Pier goes perpendicular to the water from the shore into the body of water

The Santa Cruz “Wharf” is definitely a pier.

Id definitely like to correct that and find a good citation about the bond mishap.

I'd actually propose changing references throughout the article that call the structure a "wharf" to correctly calling it a "pier". Then when the article is referring to the name, even if just saying "the Wharf", that Wharf is capitalized as it's referring to the name (which confusingly is Wharf) of the structure, rather than the type of structure.

Basically, it's 'a wharf', and more accurately 'a pier' (common noun), and 'the Wharf' (proper noun).
